Swiss independent label A Tree in a Field Records is hitting you this time with a triple reverb attack from Roy & the Devil’s Motorcycle. The four piece around the three Stähli brothers unveils a most unpolished garage/basement sound on their new 7 inch single I’ll Sing You a Song. The title track and Sweet Reputation both lead us back to good old Velvet Underground but with an unmistakable 21. century appeal and a juvenile charm.
After switching to another side (and to a speed of 33 rpm) things get a bit peculiar with Rock’n’Roll Soldier – it’s a bright psychedelic tune infused with traditional reggae sound. It made me ponder a bit about this strange combination, although I’m aware that this is far from unprecedented… Actually, the term Jamaican fusion sounds like a horrible idea in theory (with numerous mainstream examples supporting this notion) but if you consider Bad Brains, Serge Gainsbourg or Polish post punk pioneers, Brygada Kryzys for example, the outcome can be the coolest thing ever. Roy & the DMC’s effort is by all means within the cool league!

One of their latest releases

FAI BABA – SHE’S MY GURU
At first I overlooked that this album is a great one because I was wonder-struck by doomenfels so much. But when I edited the (very coming soon) radio show from these albums on the first round I wrote to a paper the number of selected songs during the listening. On the occasion of Fai Baba I selected almost the full album.
Fai Baba was founded by Fabian Sigmund in Zürich, 2008, after he came back his spititual journey from India as „Psychedelic, Garage and Soul man.” He writes and plays very strange and highly enetertaining music. Krautrock-like psych pop, drenched with noisy space rock, spiced with a little 70s disco pumping sometimes. In short: very indie rock. Beside the drums and guitars you can find a heep of old keys intstruments as Farfisa, Ace Tone and Hammmond organs, Rhodes and Crumar electric pianos, Omnichord and Moog on this album.
Fai Baba is influenced by John Lee Hooker, who rarely played on a standard beat.

Among their latest 4 releases perhaps this is the most special one

Very difficult to define Dominic Oppliger’s throbbing, ringing, rattling, jangling and clacking music. Doom or dark folk, but in this case the folk means that the music and the records were made by cheap equipment in a cellar. Well, consequently it’s underground doom folk. With medieval feeling for me, but maybe it’s only my fantasy (or my soul?) born feeling. Yes, fantasy and soul, this music requires those from you. Sometimes I also imagine a very little mystic Indian mood there. This music has a special sacral character, as if it would be a private religious music. The cover shows the doomenfelsian Paradise for you, where a satisfied, smiling hippo is lying on a tree’s branches, where the only sign of the humans is a towel, but maybe it’s stolen by a monkey with a big nose.
This EP reminds me the last line of Deadeye Dick by Vonnegut:
„You want to know something?
We are still in the Dark Ages.
The Dark Ages — they haven’t ended yet.”

Among their latest 4 releases are 3 perfect and

Well, then I’m speaking easy. Shit. Because there’re many playful, catchy tunes, but there’re not enough dynamics in the tracks, so most of the songs become boring. Enervated indie guitar pop with some really good moments. Listen and form own opinion!
I’m very sorry. It could be an excellent album.

4 Trees In A Field / 1 A perfect album by MIR
A Tree In A Field is a Swiss independent record label.
In the following days you can read about their latest 4 releases.
MIR – plays alien folk, aka UFOLK music
In the human sphere it is like a time and space noise wave
played on un/conventional rock instruments
and lots of additional electronic and analogue equipment.
The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project hadn’t so many widgets than they have,
so the sound wasn’t the real McCoy there.

The MIR was launched in 2005 under influence of the German Kosmiche Musik. The astronauts are very colourful individuals. The drummer, Daniel Buess was in the pioneer jazzcore band 16-17, is founding member of the Ensemble of Phoenix, which is specialized to contemporary music, and there are various bands and collaborations.
Papiro, the masters of strings, originally is a classical trained violinist, who plays every instrument that he can get, and had/has many projects in different styles. For example there was a mystical experience in 2003 which led him to perform music based on playing only one chord at high volume for an extended period.
MZ operates on organ, synthesizers and other electronics. He originally played guitars with different underground bands until he discovered that he was more interested in soundeffects rather than virtuosity, and developed new techniques for guitar, and started to play around with synthesizers and their modifications. When I first saw the MIR, I stared his little room size keyboard structure, and named it ‘Oh my God, what is it?’
On their Shock Your Moneymaker album two percussionists joined them. “The duo’s tabla-like playing adds a furious, repetitive element to the band’s music, an effect that becomes even more striking when Papiro brings the Indian Shehnai flute into the mix.” It’s like a Martian jungle.
The album’s producer is Alex Buess from 16-17, GOD, Phantom City, Cortex (duo with Daniel Buess) etc.
Special Swiss lo-fi doom folk by the one man act Doomenfels. Jahreszithen

Alpine tribal experimental with accurate violet cows from the space.
MIR – from Shock Your Moneymaker LP by A Tree In A Field Records
Mr Queer Fish wrote and recorded an autobiographical concept album in Detroit, 1981. For sake of the simplicity he hired the studio owner’s funky band as backing group. It was a superb decision, because it born so unique style and sound which ahead of his time: lo-fi fuzzy minimal funk rock. Mr. Queer Fish pressed 100 or 200 copies without sleeve and buried the records in his parents’ basement. Resurrection time!
