Reverend Beat-Man and the Underground – It’s a Matter of Time, the Complete PALP Session (Voodoo Rhythm Records) 2022

Új Reverend Beat-Man album. Már a hetedik!!! Én mindig úgy vagyok vele mikor meghallgatom az éppen új Rev. Beat-Man lemezt, hogy teljes komolysággal kijelentem -Eddig ez a legjobb!
A tisztelendő úr egy hétre felvonult új zenésztársaival az Alpok hegyei közé és közösen felvették a dalokat, melyek közül néhány még a covid-lezárások alatt íródott, néhány pedig más formában ugyan, de megjelent már előző lemezein. Például egyik legismertebb dalának a ‘Jesus Christ Twist’-nek most a Doom-Blues változata hallható.
A lemez egy vidám, country-s, szerelmes dalocskával kezdődik, címe egyszerűen ‘I Want To Fuck You Baby’. A második a kedvencem: ‘Slave To The Phone‘ a címe és a mai ember és a technológia kapcsolatáról mond igen sommás véleményt:

A ”Shut Up’ is egy kurvajó dal, jó sok szintivel és erős Suicide vibe-al. Végül is felesleges minden számhoz írni valamit, mind nagyszerű a maga nemében. Ennek az egész Reverend Beat-Man univerzumnak van egy sajátos hangulata, ami szerintem sokkal több embert be tudna vonzani, ha hallottak volna róla egyáltalán. Komolyan úgy gondolom, hogy egy ötvenes irodista ugyanúgy rá tudna csavarodni, mint egy 19 éves punk, vagy egy harmincas kismama. Olyan 15 éve történt, hogy valamiért belehallgattam a Petőfi Rádióba kíváncsiságból és Rev. Beat-Mantől leadták a ‘One Fine Day‘ című számot. Nem hittem a fülemnek! Ki is nyomoztam ki játszotta le -Dj Titusz volt az.

Bang Bang Band Girl – 12 Super Duper Extraordinary Girl Trouble Rock’n’Roll Tracks (Voodoo Rhythm Records) 2023

Hogy lehet ennyire izgalmas és friss egy lemez aminek tizenkét dalából tíz feldolgozás?! Ráadásul sokat hallott / játszott számok ezek többnyire az ötvenes/hatvanas évekből. The Troggs (Wild Thing), Hasil Adkins (No More Hot Dogs), Nancy Sinatra (Bang Bang), Elvis Presley (Heartbreak Hotel). Van pár punk szám is: The Heartbreakers (All By My Self), The Cramps (Call Of The Wighat) és egy korai Motörhead, a The Watcher.
Az előadó Sheril Corleone, egy chilei születésű, ma Rotterdamban élő lány, egy One-Lady Band, ha úgy tetszik. Az összes felvétel vibrál az elektromosságtól, szét van fuzz-pedálozva, reverb is van bőven plusz teremin is bejátszik gyakran. Szóval a hangzás szuper, a jó dalok adottak és ehhez jön Sheril páratlanul jó és sokszínű hangja és előadásmódja. Úgyhogy azt hiszem meg is van a válasz a kérdésre, hogy: Hogy lehet ennyire izgalmas és friss egy lemez aminek tizenkét dalából tíz feldolgozás?! Hát így.

Bad Mojos – Songs That Make Wanna Die! (Voodoo Rhythm Records) 2022

Tizenhét szám félóra alatt. Gondolhatod, hogy nem progresszív rockot kapsz ettől a három fiatal svájci sráctól. Hát kurvára nem! Tekerős, gyors, de fogós punk rock ez. Kevésbé egyértelműen a The Spits nyomdokain, mint az előző 2018-as ‘I Hope you O.D.’ nagylemez (szintén Voodoo Rhythm Records kiadvány). Csöpög belőle a negatív, mindenbe beleszaró életérzés, de azt, hogy dühös lenne nem mondanám. Még ahhoz is nihilista, hogy dühös legyen. Erre a lemezre és az előzőre is hatványozottan igaz, hogy kurvahangosan és faszán besörözve érdemes hallgatni, akkor könnyű ráfeküdni a zene sodrására. Az előző album megvan cd-n, úgyhogy számtalanszor hallgattam ennek megfelelő feltételek mellett az autóban, az anyósülésen ülve. Saját örömömre, imádott feleségem…fogalmazzunk úgy nem olyan nagy örömére.
Ramones / The Spits fanoknak melegen ajánlott, ha kicsit hallgatnának azért valami mást, de nem óhajtanak nagyon távol kerülni attól, ami már egyszer bevált.

It’s an album I always wanted to make and it almost took me 10 years after the last release.. I’m sorry.. Way too long.. but I think it’s a good album and I love it.. and I hope you too.. It’s a bit different to the others and to the music today… but who cares 😉
I selected the NEW WAVE from musicians I love the most as the moment:

NICOLE IZOBEL GARCIA is from Los Angeles with Mexian Roots. She plays an unorthodox organ and plays part of drums and percussion.
MARIO BATKOVIC is a Bosina born and since childhood living in Bern. He is a classical and kraut avantgarde accordionist. He creates film and game music and has a one man band himself. He’s a total Genius. (Prodused by Geoff Barrow of Portishead.)
JULIAN SARTORIUS another Bern original. He’s probably one of Europeans or Worlds most extraordinary drummer these days.
RESLI BURRI is a legendary Bern musician who has a jam-band together with Mario and Beat-Man. He is a multi instrumentalist play in the Dead Brothers, Padent Ochsner, is a film and circus music writer.

30 Years Anniversary Tribute Album for the Monsters

 

A tavaly 30 éves Monsters zenekar születésnapja alkalmából egy három lemezes sorozattal kedveskedett nekünk. A harmadik egy Monsters dalokat tartalmazó feldolgozás album. Tizenöt dal – azaz a bakeliten csak tizennégy, mert a Roy & The Devil’s Motorcycle tizenkét perces Pony Tail & Black Cadillac átirata csak a CD-re fért fel – de nem kell megijedni, mert a Voodoo Rhythm Records-nál évek óta a vinyl lemezhez automatikusan jár a CD is. Vannak a lemezen az istállóhoz tartozó bandák, és vannak baráti csapatok innen-onnan, kábé fele-fele arányban.

Jó az egész lemez, meg érdekes is, hogy ki, hogyan alakítja át saját képére a dalokat. Nekem egyértelműen a lemez második felén található hármas tetszik a legjobban, a 9-10-11. szám, amit akár ipari blokknak is nevezhetnénk, de legalábbis no wave-nek. Mindegy.

Sudden Infant kezd, ami Joke Lanz alteregója, aki a 90-es évek eleje óta készít noise / experimental felvételeket – de tonna számra! – és mint extrém body art művész is ismert. Az ő száma itt a More You Talk. Ezután Helios & Hess jön, akik a svájci ipari csapat, a Herpes Ö Deluxe tagjai. Velük készítette Beat-Man tíz éve a csodálatos Reverend Beat-Man & The Church of Herpes nagylemezt. Itt szerintem Monsters lemezekről vett hangmintákból vágtak össze egy dalt némi gitár gerjesztés és fémcsörömpölés kíséretében. A blokkot a Bigeneric, azaz Marco Repetto zárja, aki a legutolsó ‘M’ című albumról dolgozta fel a Let Me Spend A Night With Your Wife című dalt, és kreált az amúgy egyszálgitáros kesergőből egy minimál pszichedelik valamit. Ha a 90-es években egy DJ ezt rákeveri valami big beat lemezre, biztos hogy beőrültem volna! Nem mellékesen Marco Repetto 1977 és 80 között Bern – innen való a Voodoo Rhythm Records, és itt található a Voodoo Rhythm lemezbolt – első punk zenekarában a Gluemas-ban zenélt, ami később Grauzone lett, és volt is egy német nyelvterületen slágerlistás daluk, az Eisbar, amit éppen ő írt.

Nagyon fasza album, végül is az egész lemez nagyon jó, vannak beindult trash’n’roll-ok (The Sex Organs, The Devils), punk cuccok (The Failed Theachers, The Seniles), érzelmesebb dolgok (Dylan Walshe) vagy exotica (Ronaldo Bruno és Nicole Garcia, akit meg is tudsz hallgatni!). Borító űber, mint általában, nem Facebook barát, belül rengeteg sosem látott fotó a zenekarról.

This year Swiss rock and roll band The Monsters turned into his 30th. The Monsters are such a phenomenon like Motörhead. They also have a very own style. „M” is the 2nd of the 3 anniversary albums. It is a muck pile for trash rockers. Raw, short, fast songs almost without melodies, but with minimlaist lyrics. Exempli gratia

And the penmanship is laudable. Every info is written by hand with blue and red pens. It has brought my self-decorated high school’s books to my mind.

Az idén 30 éves The Monsters zenekar egy három részes sorozattal (az elsőről itt írtunk) ünnepli meg e jeles évfordulót, és örvendeztet meg minden jóravaló trashrockert. Íme a második kis mocsok halom, a hetedik The Monsters studió album, az ‘M’.

Amitől azt kapod amit megérdemelsz. Kopogtatnak az ajtón, kinyitod. Ott áll négy középkorú férfi, az egyik se szó se beszéd rád borítja egy 120 literes kuka teljes tartalmát, kiröhögnek és húznak is elfele, de az egyikük még oda szól, hogy most a szomszéd következik, és ha akarsz, menjél te is velük. Te meg ugye vagy mész, vagy maradsz otthon. A négy középkorú férfi természetesen a Monsters négy tagja.

Végül is a Monsters olyan jelenség, mint a mondjuk a Motörhead. Nekik isvan egy saját nagyon karakteres stílusuk, és azon belül mozognak lemezről-lemezre ilyen-olyan irányba. Ez most jó töményre sikeredett: a hangzás nyers, a számok rövidek és elég gyorsak, a dallamok szinte teljesen mellőzve, a szövegek a lehető legminimalistábbak (az első három dal szövege a számcím maga párszor elhadarva: Baby you’re my Drug / Dig my Hair / I can’t stop, oszt heló).

A külalak megint csillagos ötös, szaktanári dicsérettel! Minden infó, plusz a dalszöveg kézzel írva kék és vörös golyóstollal vagy filctollal – gondolom Beat-Man munkája. Kurvára a saját magam által felturbózott középiskolai tankönyveimet juttatja eszembe.

Ja, és a lemez a címét  Fritz Lang 1931-es filmje, az ‘ M – Egy város keresi a gyilkost’ után kapta. Igen jó film, itt megtalálod angol felirattal.

The Devils: Sin, You Sinners! / Voodoo Rhythm Records (2016)

 

Ezért szereti az ember a Voodoo Rhythm Records -ot (ezért is!)! Időnként előkapnak valahonnan egy vadiúj, fiatal, max helyi szinten ismert bandát, mint ezt a 2015 ben (írhattam vóna, tavaly) alakult nápolyi brutál duót, oszt kiadják bakeliten, cd-n. Kinek melyik a szimpatikusabb formátum.

Mégis milyen banda adja magának a ‘The Devils’ nevet 2015 ben? Hát, fiatal, hóthülye, beleszarós, egyszerű, magabiztos, lényegretörő. Na, ez mind igaz is rájuk, azt hiszem. Némileg árnyalja a képet, és megmagyarázza miért visel ez a szerelmespár papi ill. apáca öltözéket a színpadon, ha tudjuk, hogy a nevet az 1971- es Ken Russel film, az Ördögök után vették fel.

Elmondásuk szerint Blueson, punkon nevelkedtek, és egy rakás underground bandát hallgattak, olyanokat hogy: The Cramps, Hound Dog Taylor, The Gories, Jon Spencer, Fugazi, Hasil Adkins, The Oblivians. Hát ebbe a sorba nem nagyon lehet belekötni….

Na. Ez év februárjában vették fel a lemezt Montpellier -ben Jim Diamond -al (The Dirtbombs basszer!!!) midőn Beat-Man is éppen arra járt, és egyből szerződtette őket. Nagyon helyesen.

A lemez. Ha annyit mondok, hogy 10 szám 17 percben? Akkor már sejthető, hogy itt bizony nincsennek hosszú intrók, pszichedelikus elszállások, egyebek. Dara van, hisztérikus, mániákus tekerés és FUZZZZ orgia !!!!!! Primitív és durva. Annyira, hogy a 17 perc inkább 37 nek tűnik, és nem is nagyon van hiányérzete a hallgatónak.
A dalok szövege is ugyanezt a koncepciót követi. Szavak, félmondatok mániákus ismétlése. „Onan came on the floor / the priest touched me harder” oszt kész. Vagy „This town once was wild / but now it’s drunk” 15 ször egymás után…

A zene persze totál trash rock n roll, de a lemez vége felé van pár instrumentális szám, aminek egy-egy témáját ha mondjuk 1-2 percig ismételgetnék takaros kis stoner dal is lehetne belőle, mondjuk olyasmi mint a nagyon korai Kyuss. Ja, meg néha finn testvéreink, a Black Magic Six is beugrik (akik úgy szintén duoban nyomják).

Nagyon jó lemez, nagyon jó banda, határozottan úgy érzem, hogy látni fogjuk őket RNR666 színpadon hamarosan!

THE DEVILS formed in 2015 in Naples. In the beginning they did countless shows in Italy DIY and France where they meet up with Jim Diamond from the DIRTBOMBS who recorded their first full Lenght album, the same day Reverend Beat-Man from VOODOO RHYTHM RECORDS was in the same town and got their recordings and signed them up on the label.

Sin,You Sinners is an album with a huge wall of GUITAR FUZZ BLUES ROCKABILLY NOISE TRASH ROCK’N’ROLL TORNADO, vocals as Stupid and Minimalistic as it gets, this is NO BOB DYLAN POETRY, thats pure EVIL and Lots of Fun

If you’re a frequent visitor on our site, I’m sure that you know Reverend Beat-Man and his record label, Voodoo Rhythm Records. He has been nominated for the Swiss Music Prize, which will be awarded for the first time on 19 September. Among the nominates also are the folk-punk band Mama Rosin, and the avant-garde music group Ensemble Phoenix Basel, in which you can find Alex Buess, who is also member of the experimental space rock trio MIR.

„My biggest idol has always been Batman, so everyone just called me Beat-Man.
Now my name is just Beat-Man, even in my passport.”

Born Beat Zeller in 1967 near Berne, Reverend Beat-Man has become a firm fixture on the music scene. He first tried his hand as a singer and musician at the age of 13 before forming his band The Monsters in 1986 and setting up his own record label Voodoo Rhythm Records in 1992. With The Monsters, Zeller created an entirely new genre that fuses psychobilly with garage punk and went on to showcase it with more than a thousand concerts in South America, Japan, Australia, the US and the rest of the world. He attained cult status thanks in no small part to this work with Voodoo Rhythm Records, which has gained him a reputation as a resolute champion of innovative and experimental artists. In Switzerland, his achievements were honoured with the Canton of Berne Special Recognition Award in 2007.

Abridged version of John Schooley’s legend

„Details of the early life of John Schooley are sketchy. Various sources place his birth either in Columbus, Ohio or Vancouver, British Columbia. We do know that his family moved to the rural enclave of Niangua, Missouri when he was still quite young. His parents were sharecroppers, barely scratching out a living from the rocky soil of the Ozark Mountains. The youngest of eight or possibly nine siblings, John Schooley did not take to farming, or, apparently, work of any kind. He could be found, often as not, shirking his chores to hunch over his guitar. He would stomp his foot on a board or on the front porch, frequently scaring the cows.  The family Victrola was stocked with any 78″s that could be found, mostly by Jimmie Rodgers, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Doctor Ross, and Don Van Vliet. Most evenings the family tuned to radio station KWTO out of Springfield, to hear the “Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle with Chet Atkins and his Famous Guitar” perform as part of the syndicated “RadiOzark” network.

School was never to his liking and Schooley quit after graduating the fifth grade. Chafing at the dreary small town life of Niangua, Schooley left never to return. He rambled north to Columbia, Missouri. First trying to put together a hot-jazz combo along the lines of the then-popular Django Reinhart, but he was unable to find suitable musicians. Then, billing himself as “John Schooley and His One Man Band”, he rigged up a kick drum and hi-hat and began performing at “house frolics” and on the sidewalk in front of local record store Whizz Records. He met with minimal success. He was frequently chased away by the proprietor with a broom shortly after setting up. Being unwilling (or perhaps unable) to learn pop hits of the day, Schooley tried to force his listeners to dance to his own frequently atonal blend of blues and country, again with minimal success.

The musical scene in Columbia was so stagnant that when it was announced that bluegrass stars The Oblivians were coming to town, Schooley was able to secure the opening slot even though he had no band together at the time.” He founded the guitar, drum, and vocal trio The Revelators. Surprising success. „When the record, titled “We Told You Not To Cross Us” was released it caused a sensation in at least three Missouri counties and parts of Arkansas and Illinois. The Revelators were immediately rushed off to a whirlwind tour of Europe, which included performances for the as-yet not-dead Princess Diana and Archduke Ferdinand.”

After the break-up he went to Texas „and took whatever work he could find, from oil roughneck to hotel elevator operator. He eventually started another musical combo, the Hard Feelings” while he continued performing as one man band. He added harmonica, snare drum, and washboard to his kick and hi-hat apparatus and recorded some songs.  „Voodoo Rhythm recently uncovered the tapes of these songs, long presumed lost, in an oil drum outside of Lockhart, Texas.” Album preview

The Family Fodder is among the funniest British bands ever. Since the mid-70s they have been playing really indie pop music, but literally! It’s independent from everything. So the best. Now here is a vinyl-only collection of 11 love songs, that have never before been released on vinyl. Alig Fodder says about it: „We collected all the love songs together without all the annoying instrumentals, dubs and solos.”
