but We The State
„We must not forget anything. We must know our history, know it as it really is, draw lessons from it and always remember those who created the Russian state, championed its dignity and made it a great, powerful and mighty state.
We shall preserve that memory, and we shall preserve that tradition through the ages. We shall hand down to our descendants all that is best in our history – all that is best.
Esteemed citizens of Russia, we believe in our strength, in our ability to really transform and transfigure the country. We have common goals.
We want our Russia to be a free, prosperous, rich, strong and civilized country, a country of which its citizens are proud and which is respected in the world. (…)
We believe you. We are counting on you. Don’t deceive us. I can assure you that in my work I will be guided only by the interests of the state but there may well be mistakes. But I can promise you, and indeed I do promise, you that I will work openly and honestly.
I consider it my sacred duty to unite the people of Russia and to gather citizens around the clearly-defined tasks and aims and to remember, every minute of every day, that we are one nation and we are one people. We have one common destiny.”
Putin’s inauguration speech as president, 2000
Its members are from e.g. Total Control, The UV Race, Dick Diver or Terry. About their music I could write that sometimes like VU and Nico, but I do not want to write it, so forget it. This song is taken their 4th album Sister, Sister out now on Bedroom Suck Records (AUS). It was recorded in a kitchen of another suburb of Melbourne, Collingwood.
On that place which is today Lower Plenty the first settler was a Hungarian political immigrant Sigismund Wekey in the mid of the 19th century. He was a lawyer, but during the revolutiuon and war of independence of Hungary in 1848/49 he became a captain and adjutant of the political leader Kossuth. After the fall he went to London, learnt mining, and wrote the first Hungarian grammar for the English people.
He arrived in Australia in his late 20s. On the site which is today Lower Plenty he purchased land as a manager of a shareholder company he founded with a vision to start the wine industry of Melbourne, but the company went to bankruptcy within two years. During this time he was the secretary of Philosophical Society (later Philosophical Institute) of state Victoria. But because the cost of the society’s publications were paid by himself for two years finally he resigned.
He also was a correspondent of some journals, later registrar and postmaster of a gold mining town Gaffneys Creek. He applied for patents of some mining machineries, and became a director of the Aladdin and Try-Again United Gold Mining Co., but he was placed under charge of conspiracy with his two co-directors in 1870. He was sentenced and spent one year in gaol where he wrote a pamphlet about the elastic laws and the political corruption which endangered of the liberty of the subject, titled The Institution Of The Land We Live In. After his release he left Australia, travelled around the world with his family, and finally settled in Budapest.
O LENDÁRIO CHUCROBILLYMAN – oh how beautiful this name – IS A ONE-MAN-BAND FROM BRAZIL – who sell his soul to the devil on the corner of Rio Iguazu and Rio Negro – HE PLAYS AMAZON DELTA BLUES – this is my favourite song from him:
It is on his latest album MAN MONKEY which RELEASED ON VINYL now. If you want to buy please write to him: klauskoti AT gmail.com. CD and digital versions are available via his label Fon-Fon Records
But what is Macumba? It is a name of an African drum and a popular chaotic religion-like something in South-America, which combines elements of many different religions like voodoo. There is a ritual with drums, dance, sacrifice of animals and other offerings for the spirits. There is a master who can connect with spirits, of course in trance, and can ask them to do good or bad things – especially in love and money matters, because the worshippers are interested in these mysterious things mainly. During the liturgy the congregation falls into trance, and on the end of the service they will have just a little reminiscence about what exactly happened. Exactly like in the profane way of worship of spirits.
Because an average person also can connect with spirits through his lips. In these case those spirits are in bottles and you need swallow them. The trance comes right after the empty bottles. During the process at first the good spirits will be victorious, but after a total blackout the bad spirits will rule your body.
But if you are lucky enough will find a cold beer in your fridge.
„If you go fuck three girls in one week, you fuck all three of them good! You know what I mean? If you do a song, put you heart in it! Don’t come up with no bullshit lyric! Come up with the real lyric! If the word is „Take it out, let me see it”, then say it! Don’t say stuff like „Ooh, you look kinda mysterious to me.” That ain’t sayin’ the same damn thing!”
ANDRE WILLIAMS is a wonder. Not just because of his oeuvre, but also because he is not just alive, but active up to this date. He made many songs in various styles as rock and roll, blues, soul, funk, rap or garage rock, and not just for himself. In the first chapter of his career he worked together e.g. Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Ike and Tina Turner, George Clinton and more. In the second chapter which started in late 80s he worked with Jon Spencer, and members of such garage rock bands as The Oblivians, Dirtboms or Gories. Yestarday our black godfather turned into his 80th.
His career has started with a fraudulent enlistment in 1950. When he was 14 he joined the US Navy with his brother’s birth certificate, because the age limit was 17. But not long after this his brother got drafted.
I’m moving marines on the USS Compton Destroyer from shore to a hospital ship, under fire every fuckin’ night! Boom! Boom! I’m a trainee on the 40 mm. Fifteen motherfuckin’ years old, OK? These motherfuckers fly me back to Washington, give me a general Court Martial and send me to the penitentiary for a year! Fraudulent enlistment! On the Court Martial board, I’m sitting with five fuckin’ admirals. All stiff, bold, big motherfuckers, you know.
My lawyer said „Send this kid home, he’s a child!” Then they came back and said „One year in Fort Levenworth, and a dishonourable discharge” and I said [adopts slow dramatic tone] „Kiss-my-ass-mother-fuckers!” So they appealed the case and they sent me back from Fort Levenworth after 6 weeks for a retrial. I go back on the retrial, thinking they gonna cut me-a-loose. Them cocksuckers made the year stick and give me a bad conduct discharge. All they did change was the discharge. You get a red corduroy coat, a Ben Hogan cap, a pair of black pants, twenty five dollars and a train ticket with your choice of destination.
He didn’t go back to Chicago. He feared that would be send to a reformatory school, so he went to Detroit. It was a Tuesday when he arrived. There he found a theatre where on every Tuesday evening was a talent show. 25 USD was the first prize. Afternoon he wrote his first song and won. And next week won again, and then again and again, and finally got a contract from a little record label Fortune Records. His break trough hit was the „Bacon Fat” in 1956. He said about
When I came up with „Bacon Fat” I was travelling from Detroit to Memphis. That’s when I knew that I had to come up with a gimmick. So I stopped in Memphis and I got an egg and bacon sandwich – on toast! I’m driving and a lot of places where we used to travel, it was only a two lane highway so you’d see the cotton pickers on both sides and I’m driving and [starts tapping a beat on his thigh, starts humming] „Down in Tennessee… and the name of the dance is…” and I had the sandwich in my hand and there it came, „The Bacon Fat!”

He was there when Motown came alive, and also produced recordings for another little label Chess Records (Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Little Walter, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf). Worked together with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gay, The Contours, The Supremes, Ike and Tina Turner, Edwin Starr, Parliament, Funkadelic and many more. But in the 80s he slipped into poverty because of his alcohol and drug addictions, and even he lived as a homeless in Chicago too. His comeback album „Directly From The Streets” in 1990 refers to this tract. It was a funk rap album. Since then he made many fantastic albums with different bands and musicians, for example:
soul band The Diplomats of Solid Sound, jazz-funk-rock band Morning 40 Federation under pseudonym The New Orleans Hellhounds, Canadian country rock and roll band The Sadies, Chicago garage rock band The Goldstars, members of The Oblivians, Dirtboms, Dirty Three, Crime & City Solution, Cheater Slicks, Gories and same ones.
This is his greatest hit. Originally it was written for The Five Du-Tones in 1963.
His brand new album released this summer on Bloodshot Records

I say: Hard rock and roll psychedelia turns into country, blues, jazz’n back. Very playful and funny. My favourite moment when the easy rock and roll song I Wanna Be Your Puppy turns into Deep Purple’s Space Truckin’

„Juanita had a car and she liked the way I played guitar
She gave me little white pills and pushed a little too hard
Well my memory ain’t too exact but I saw some things that I can’t take back
Thirty days on the road is thirty days of livin hard”

from the interview
„My mother sent me over to grandpa for something. Everybody was sleeping, except Willie Nelson (multiple Grammy winner country legend) . He was sitting in the garden and offered me his cigarette. I asked him: what is this? He said „God’s gift to the suffering people.”

The band was founded 25 years back by three countryside brothers after they went to a Spacemen 3 show in the nearby big city. Their music is distorted rock and roll of the 50-60 years with a big spoon blues and dub technique in highly psychedelic manner. They’ ve only released 3 three albums on Voodoo Rhythm Records. In 2014 they made music for a documentary Tino – Frozen Angel about legendary Swiss counter-culture hero Martin „Tino” Schippert (1946-81), who was the president of Swiss chapter of Hell’s Angels. Because of a rape the Angels became a target of prosecution, he escaped from Switzerland. He lived in Lebanon, where he worked as a hashish farmer. But finally he went to Bolivia, and died there in a small village Tutilimundi, it means All Worlds.
On their albums there are some covers. Now you can listen to the original and the cover ones too
About the songs
Johnny B. Goode is a 1958 rock-and-roll song written and first recorded by Chuck Berry.
Little Anthony and the Imperials is an American rhythm and blues/soul/doo-wop vocal group from New York City, their first single was Tears on My Pillow in 1958.
The song It Hurts Me Too is a blues standard. First recorded in 1940 by American blues musician Tampa Red. Elmore James (1918 – 1963) who was an American influential blues musician, recorded his own versions in 1957, and in the early 60s.
David „Junior” Kimbrough (1930 – 1998) was an American juke joint blues legend. Whose first single was released in 1967, but his first album came out just in 1992 by Fat Possum Records. The song Baby Please Don’t Leave Me taken from his last album Meet Me In The City (1999). In 2005, a tribute album was released with such artists as Iggy Pop, Mark Lanegan, Jack Oblivian, Black Keys, Spiritualized or Blues Explosion. Even Daft Punk also made a 15 minutes long re-edited version of a Kimbrough’s song I Gotta Try You Girl in 2016. Reputedly he was survived by 36 children.
The Ballad of Casey Jones is a traditional song about railroad engineer Casey Jones. It tells of how Jones and his fireman Sim Webb raced their locomotive to make up for lost time, but discovered a freight train ahead of them on the line, and Casey tried to stop the machine and save the passengers. His body was found lying under the cab, with his skull crushed and right arm torn from its socket. The fireman jumped just in time to save his life. The express messenger was thrown against the side of the car, having two of his ribs broken by the blow, but his condition is not considered dangerous. The train was only two minutes behind schedule.
Soon after Casey’s death (30 April 1900), the song was first sung by engine wiper and friend of Casey to the tune of a popular song of the time known as „Jimmie Jones”. As railroaders stopped in Canton, Mississippi they would pick up the song and pass it along. American country blues guitarist Walter E. „Furry” Lewis (1893 – 1981) recorded his version in 1928. Anyway he was a street sweeper for the city of Memphis, he held this job until his retirement in 1966.
Red Foley (1910 – 1968) is one of the greatest country musicians. He was an inspiration to rock ‘n’ roll, in particular Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley, who both covered many of his songs. Will the Circle Be Unbroken? is a popular Christian hymn, was written in 1907. The Red Foley version was published in 1958.
