The Amber Lights are an excellent prog rock band in Germany. Fine endless song and solos sure. Unfortunately I don’t like this style, the virtuosity makes me tired, but it doesn’t matter now, because here is a Kitty Ina Moonlight with Xanthe Waithe. She is an Australian writer, actress and singer, known from Mick Harvey’s solo recordings. And this
is such as if would come from those. Or from a Nick Cave album. But it’s from the last album of The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project. And Mick Harvey and Nick Cave also took part in these sessions.
Axels & Sockets out now on Glitterhouse Records (Germany)

You’re in the 50s-60s (but before the beat madness). Switch on the radio. Rhythm’n blues’n rock’n’roll on New Orleans wave. Now by The Royal Premiers from France.

„Meg, Richie, and I spent a lot of time drinking beer. At the time we asked her to be in the band, her lack of experience on drums was no greater than our lack of experience on guitars, so it wasn’t all that unusual. I think she’s really come into her own bashing away and is the absolute best drummer for Watery Love” to play heavy listening raw noisy garage punk.
Decorative Feeding LP and a 7″ by a competent authority: In The Red Records (US).
But Meg leaved the band so as to concentrate her absolutely different solo career. She was replaced by Ben from Philadelphian highly praised psych-blues-rock-jam band Birds Of Maya. (Another bird is in the Purling Hiss too.)

Jeffrey Lee Pierce was an influential songwriter and musician. He formed The Gun Club with Kid Congo Powers in 1979. Anyway Pierce was the head of the Blondie fan club, while Kid was the president of Ramones Fan Club in Los Angeles, and both of Mexican descent. The band was a pioneer of roots based punk rock. Kid Congo left the band before the recording of the first album to join The Cramps, but later came back more times. Later both joined Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Gun Club had lots of line-up change because of Pierce drug abuse and alcoholism. Nick Cave said: „He looked increasingly ill, I mean, we all did, but Jeffrey looked particularly so.” He died from brain hemorrhage at the age of 37 in 1996. He was HIV positive, and also suffering from cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis.
Cypress Grove was one of his collaborators of his delta blues influenced album which was released in 1992. After Pierce’s death Grove found a cassette containing unfinished song skeletons that he and Jeffrey had recorded. These were given out to some artists – friends, former band members and fans – to make own versions. On the first album We Are Only Riders (2010) and second one The Journey Is Long (2012, LISTEN!): Ravenoettes, Mark Lanegan, Debbie Harry, Nick Cave, Lydia Lunch, Mick Harvey, Kid Congo Powers, David Eugene Edwards (16 Horsepower), Sadies, Isobel Campbell, Barry Adamson, Warren Ellis (The Dirty Three), Tex Perkins, Tav Falco, Hugo Race and many others.

„Self Employment is the key to an early grave, I see this in lots of musician friends of mine as well. You are your own travel agent, your own booking agent, your own photographer, your own graphic designer, your own manager, your own producer… on top of that you are a musician. With my show I am the drummer, singer, guitarist and sometimes harmonica player, you could say it is not a way of life, it IS life”.

„Trends change each others quarterly in the party district of Budapest, but RNR666 snaps one’s fingers at these, just organizes his parties with garage rock, punk, blues and wtf bands from all over the world almost for 10 years. French garage rock band? I have no idea of it, but let’s go there, will be high spirits and beer sprinkling, it’s cert. Psychedelic band from Italy? I never heard their name before, but it will be sick sure enough. Go! Israeli garage punk? By all means.” (Urbanplayer)
After break-up of two cultic Italian garage rock bands The Boilers and The Ultra Twist some members of those founded Big Mountain County. They play psychedelic garage rock’n’roll, sometimes it’s like the early Butthole Surfers, then they play a blues from Robert Johnson.
Dope Calypso play blues punk’n’roll with members of Kollaps and Haunebu. Their music reminds me of Night Terrors, Superhelicopter and Black Magic Six. Debut show.

„I was eleven. I took a few lessons, but not many really. I used to hide from my guitar teacher. Maybe I didn’t feel he was teaching me the right stuff or something.”
In the mid-80s under the influence of 50’s rock and roll Dex Romweber founded his legendary „hardcore Americana” band Flat Duo Jets – as if it came from the grave
Then they went US tour with The Cramps. Their records were released by roots and authentic rock and roll specialist Norton Records and others. 1998 brings the major label contract to them but the album Lucky Eye (with unusual horn and strings arrangement) was the swan song. After the break-up Dex made some solo records and founded the Dex Romweber Duo with his drummer Crash LeResh. In 2007 he was replaced with Dex’s sister, Sarah, who was member in indie pop band Let’s Active in the 80s. She says: „there are few things that me and Dexter absolutely agree on 100% – like Chopin, reincarnation, UFO’s, ghosts…” „and psychology” – Drex completes the list.

„There is a real film noir quality to what we do. Really man, you see the darkest alleys. You see the most haunted streets. You see the wildest prostitutes. You come across drugs. You come across incredibly long drives. You come across band arguments. You come across mysterious people. You come across great people. You come across tremendous assholes, you see this real weird part of America that most people don’t really see on that level. When each record comes, I’m trying to figure out what’s going to fit at this time and what’s a picture of the last two years I’ve lived. The songs that come to me are very much a mirror of what my life has been like since the last record.”
The next chapter is Images 13 with repainted versions of Who (So Sad About Us), Rachmaninoff (Prelude in G Minor), Henry Mancini (Blackout!), Harry Lubin (composer, 60s sci-fi series, Outer Limits, One Step Beyond) and there is a deadly love ballad We’ll Be Together Again, which was written by Eddie Cohran’s girlfriend Sharon Sheeley after the fatal car accident. She also was in the taxi. The song was never released formally but recorded by Jackie DeShannon in the early ‘60s.
Images 13 – new Drex Romweber Duo album on Bloodshot Records. Two intelligible, post-edited sentences from my notes about it: Dynamic roots rock’n’roll with surfy garage rock feeling. There’re some reminiscence of Elvis, Bowie, Iggy Pop.
There are some date for UK, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium and Holland.

Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011) was an Afro-American poet and musician. He made his music in jazz, funk and soul, and exerted huge influence on hip-hop with his spoken words. His last album „I’m New Here” was recorded in 2008. During the session he recorded stripped-down new versions of some of his songs. Accompanying himself on piano and with no overdubs. This is „Alien”
from the album „Nothing New”. It will be released only on 12″ vinyl, limited to 3000 copies, and available exclusively on Record Store Day, 19th April 2014 by XL Recordings. The original Alien
On his first album (1970, produced by Bob Thile) he named as influences Richie Havens (singer/songwriter, the opening act in Woodstock), John Coltrane (one of the greatest jazz saxists), Otis Redding (soul and blues singer/songwriter), Jose Feliciano (Puerto Rican guitar virtuoso), Billie Holiday, Nina Simone (jazz singers) from musicians. From activists: Langston Hughes (poet, writer, human rights activist), Malcolm X (while was imprisonment owing to lacreny concverted to Islam, became black superiority activist, then would be human rights activist) and Huey Newton (was a controversial person, co-founded the Afro-American left-wing organization, Black Panther Party, he killed a 17 years old girl becuse he very didn’t like if somebody called him by his nickname „baby”, the eyewitness changed her testimony after some Black Panther members tried to kill her, a man who known too many things about this case would be buried alive in the desert. He was shot to death by a drug dealer Black Guerrilla Family member shortly after Newton left a crack house. Black Guerrilla Family is a gang which was founded at San Quentin State Prison and based on Marxist and Maoist ideology.)
Record Store Day will be on 19 April. Participant stores on your location.

Industrial blues where performance and body art meet improvisation and noise on the album „Wölfli’s Nightmare” by Sudden Infant on Voodoo Rhythm.
He is a Swiss composer, body and performance artist. Composed music for contemporary dance, theater, films, radio plays, and installations. Among his numerous collaborations there are Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and The New Blockaders.
Wölfli (1864-1930) was a Swiss art brut artist, unconscious father of the surrealism and a mental patient. He used the Campbell’s soup cans as artistic motif at first. An article about Art Brut and Wölfli in Hungarian.

When I have heard the Sunday Morning at first yesterday I was delighted at it because I thought that it’s a „real time” song but it was written in 1958 by Margo Guryan.
She is singer, songwriter, lyricist and musician, her sole album was released in 1968. Her songs was recorded by Carmen McRae, Julie London, Dizzy Gillespie, Harry Nilsson, Saint-Etienne and many others. She refused to tour so she became disinteresting for the music industry as a performer, but worked on as writer and produced records for others. Then she worked as a piano teacher and produced music books for students. In 2007, she released a new single, entitled „16 Words”. The track refers to one phrase from a speech of G.W. Bush in 2003.
