BIG SEXY (BEASTIE) NOISE @ A38

Lydia Lunch, James Johnston and Ian White were back on „the ship” once again, and after last year’s mindblowing Retrovirus gig, I was more than looking forward to what they were going to do this time.

But firstly, let’s talk about derTANZ. It had been a while since I last heard them live, so I didn’t quite know what to expect, but I was definitely more excited about them opening for Lydia Lunch than I was about last year’s support band, and – oh, boy! – they didn’t disappoint. The moment I heard the bass, I knew this was going somewhere. It is the kind of dirty, distorted bass sound that makes you question why most bands even had guitars in the first place, while wondering what Rob Wright might be up to these days, and remembering how much you love Shellac, when a perfectly positioned, close-to-deafening shriek pulls you back into the audience. This by itself should be enough to make me giddy, but when accompanied by tight, syncopated drum work, the result is ecstatic.

Some might call it post-punk, they themselves might call it freepunk, but it’s also the kind of noise rock that has been missing from the Hungarian music scene for so long, and finally, there we have it: a sufficiently dissonant, simple, but heavy rhythm section (too bad the drum groove falls apart a few times) with an interesting addition: Kovács Gábor’s singing. It’s from a completely different musical universe. It starts out deep and haunting, then it turns into a chant (sometimes even reminiscent of Jim Morrison-esque spoken word), then there’s a shrill, a scream, some praiseworthy shouting, and yes, it is more often than not a tad off-key, but it still all fits together fine enough. There’s not a word uttered between songs, only when the last sound of the cacophonic jam session has died off do they announce their name and say good night, so we can all grab a drink and get ready for Big Sexy Noise.

RNR666 presents – ‘VATTA’ the new LP from derTANZ

dertanzAfter becoming one of the flagship bands of Hungarian independent music with their 2013 LP, derTANZ is now back with a new self-released album.

It’s been almost a year since the release of ‘Kaktusz’ and the band seems to be ready for action and as you can guess, it is  once again a ruthless, loud and twisted attack on human senses.

VATTA is no principal shift from the older songs – especially if we ignore the fact that the minimalist ‘free punk’ music of derTANZ is not at all based on songs (in a traditional 4/4 sense, of course).  This album is more like a post-apocalyptic audio book  for the last handful of  survivors (?) on Earth. The 30 minute-flow is basically one indivisible musical piece recorded in their countryside rehearsal space with the help of András Weil.

a0115888782_2I wanted to paint a bee but it became a fly

The trio claims that they only had a couple of songs but no plans or directions in advance, they have just spread out an imaginary butterfly net to see what they can catch – and as Gábor puts it ‘we have caught bats, bees and flies as well‘.

Those who are already familiar with the music of derTANZ  will probably be least surprised (but most satisfied instead) that the new album is again attempting to evoke the atmosphere of their insane live performances (just like on Kaktusz) with a loose combination of free flowing sequences, lots of tense feedback noise and maniac loop sounds.

And how about some words of advice from the band before listening?

‘Listen to it as loud as possible’– Gábor says.

So, here it is – RNR666 proudly presents

VATTA

a good girl’s guide to bad music – Broken Cups + derTanz @ Blahán Klub

Good girls love bad guys forever! Two of the most bad-ass Hungarian bands gave a thrilling show this May in a small venue and I must say you are most unlucky if you didn’t attend.

So, here’s a little souvenir from that dark and raging night, proving that Hungary knows how to recycle everyday frustration and that certain roaring coming from a male human’s crotch.

Aren’t these the two essential ingredients for bad music?

Broken Cups is well-known for their maniac live shows and evil post punk sound – but with a frontman so eager to surprise the audience, you just never know what to expect from him. Those guys sitting with an astonished expression probably haven’t been to a gig where they had to face that aforesaid crotch at point-blank range (1.10)

derTanz is probably the best live band in Hungary now. What they do on stage today is the result of playing together for a damn long time, which clearly shows. Hypnotic improvisations and killer songs – well, no one really knows what Gábor is talking about during a gig but more or less everyone is shit scared. Or look at Broken Cups’ frontman, Dávid in this vid, totally frenzied from Statue, the opening track from the first derTanz LP, Kaktusz

The guys from the two bands couldn’t really stop making noise after the gigs, so they teamed up for a little jamming…sounds squishy? not at all

Két hangos magyar lemez

Lehet bontani a pezsgőt, a magyar zene se nem ledöntött tekebábu, se nem bábu, úgy egyáltalán,  nah – szedjétek is a jóféle friss magyar termést!
A csepeli-budapesti Wormkids már igazán a kínosságig halogatta első lemezét, de ez nyilván senkit sem zavart volna, ha nem játszanának tökös és hangos zenét – még mindig olyanok kissé, mintha egy East Ray Bay-jel kiegészült Black Sabbath játszana mondjuk Man or Astro-man?-t, valahol egy kihalt siófoki partszakaszon. Olykor nindzsamaszkban.
Oké, a hasonlat frappánsságáért nem kezeskedem, de azért mindenképpen, hogy érdemes meghallgatni a június végén kitett Inzen című lemezt, üresáratok nélküli, szuper hangzású cucc.
A másik zenei tengely pedig Budapest-Balassagyarmat, ami roppant érdekesen hangzik, viszont többet sajnos nem nagyon tudni a derTANZ nevű zenekarról, ami abból a szempontból tulajdonképpen mindegy, hogy a White party önmagában is elég érdekes, ráadásul kevés olyan jóleső izgalom érhet egy magyar zenebuzit, mint amikor klassz zeneblogokon fut bele olyan magyar zenékbe, amikről addig még nem hallott.
Demó lévén nyers az egész, kissé minimalista, de simán képes a hallgató beaprítására – elég felszabadultan aberrált dünnyögős-vicsorgós poszt-zene. Lo-Fi free punk, mondják ők. Amen.
