Fast & Loud

JOHNNY MAFIA hails from Sens, Burgundy (which is known more for it’s wheat and cereal production than rock ‘n’ roll) and bring a young, snotty, explosive and ferociously fun energy that drives audiences into a near-frenzy. Inspired by classics like The Ramones, T-Rex, and The Clash, they also draw heavily on contemporary acts like
Ty Segall, Jay Reatard, and the Wavves. The band have just released the video single for BIG BRAWL

after recently finishing recording and mastering their sophomore album PRINCES DE L’AMOUR with producer JIM DIAMOND – who was the bass player of Dirtbombs and produced albums for The Sonics, Andre Williams, The John Spencer Blues Explosion, White Stripes and countless others.

Jim was forced to shut the doors at his studio Ghetto Recorders in 2015 due to what can only be described as “hipsterfication in the downtown Detroit area when his landlord doubled his rent. He set up a new base in Montpellier, and continues his prolific presence across the scene, working with bands as far and wide from Cambodia to Cleveland. In recent years, Diamond has become something of an unofficial in-house label producer/engineer at DIRTY WATER RECORDS.

The album PRINCES DE L’AMOUR will release on 9 November on DIRTY WATER RECORDS (UK).

Are You Ready For The Orphans?

Rare that I want to post a song just because it caught me. Usually those are related to record releases, so this is a rare moment.

READY ORPHANS is a new band from Detroit that consists of members of hardcore punk band The Armed, hardcore metal band Tharsis They, and indie pop band Zoos of Berlin. Lead singer Cara Drolshagen shrieks over blissed out noise. As happy as hardcore can get. Their first public track is an industrial-like noise rock song, it comes the Canadian band Odonis Odonis to my mind

applewhite

„just in time for the holidays”

from MARSHALL APPLEWHITE next mixtape Suburban Boredom, out now on little Scottish label CLANDESTINE RECORDS on cassette and digital.

He says „If EDM is drug music, I am the anti drug.” But there was another Marshall Applewhite who also said very particular things.

After divorce, without job, in the state of depression a gay music teacher from Texas, Marshall Applewhite, the reincarnation of Jesus Christ met a woman who used to got instructions from a monk Brother Francis from the 19th century. They identified themselves as the two witness of God which are described by John the Revelator in his nightmare after an overabundant late supper. Those two have authority of prophesy, have power over sky and waters, and able to strike the earth with plague. They also concluded that they had been chosen to full fill biblical prophecies, so they went to proselytization tour, but without any success. Maybe because

„It would be impossible to explain to you who we are, where we come from, and who we represent. If we tried, you would not believe us. We exist in another dimension, which does not allow for the use of currency.”

This quote is taken from one of their sacred messages. This one was found in their room in a Holiday Inn.

The essence of their catechism

We have superior souls which are from other space and planted into our human bodies. We are here to teach people how to reach the next level of existence. To reach this state need to strip all the human habits and emotions, for example must to jettison from the luxury of thinking too. And when the time will come a spaceship will come for the true believers and take their souls to the Heaven and everybody else will die in a final fire shower.

The time came in 1997 with Comet Hale-Bopp, when an amateur astronomer took a photograph which showed a large metallic object behind the comet. So the 39 members of Heaven’s Gate group prepared themselves for the journey as guidance by the spiritual leader.

At first everybody went and bought the same type of black Nike shoes – because of the Nike logo is similar to a comet, but a „Heaven’s Gate Away Team” armband, passport, driving licence, a 5 dollar bill and some change also were needed. The latter because so they will be able to call home.

Finally they released their souls from the human body with a mix of medication of epilepsy, vodka and apple sauce, and before the final exit they set plastic bags on their heads. But they all slipped on a banana peel. The photo of the comet with that UFO was fake. So they in vain took out insurance on alien abduction.

Today news: Psychiatrists have urged parents to stop telling kids about Father Christmas because it could undermine trust in their parents and lead to „abject disappointment”. „If parents can lie so convincingly and over such a long time, what else can they lie about?”

Andre Williams 80

„If you go fuck three girls in one week, you fuck all three of them good! You know what I mean? If you do a song, put you heart in it! Don’t come up with no bullshit lyric! Come up with the real lyric! If the word is „Take it out, let me see it”, then say it! Don’t say stuff like „Ooh, you look kinda mysterious to me.” That ain’t sayin’ the same damn thing!”

ANDRE WILLIAMS is a wonder. Not just because of his oeuvre, but also because he is not just alive, but active up to this date. He made many songs in various styles as rock and roll, blues, soul, funk, rap or garage rock, and not just for himself. In the first chapter of his career he worked together e.g. Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Ike and Tina Turner, George Clinton and more. In the second chapter which started in late 80s he worked with Jon Spencer, and members of such garage rock bands as The Oblivians, Dirtboms or Gories. Yestarday our black godfather turned into his 80th.

His career has started with a fraudulent enlistment in 1950. When he was 14 he joined the US Navy with his brother’s birth certificate, because the age limit was 17. But not long after this his brother got drafted.

I’m moving marines on the USS Compton Destroyer from shore to a hospital ship, under fire every fuckin’ night! Boom! Boom! I’m a trainee on the 40 mm. Fifteen motherfuckin’ years old, OK? These motherfuckers fly me back to Washington, give me a general Court Martial and send me to the penitentiary for a year! Fraudulent enlistment! On the Court Martial board, I’m sitting with five fuckin’ admirals. All stiff, bold, big motherfuckers, you know.

My lawyer said „Send this kid home, he’s a child!” Then they came back and said „One year in Fort Levenworth, and a dishonourable discharge” and I said [adopts slow dramatic tone] „Kiss-my-ass-mother-fuckers!” So they appealed the case and they sent me back from Fort Levenworth after 6 weeks for a retrial. I go back on the retrial, thinking they gonna cut me-a-loose. Them cocksuckers made the year stick and give me a bad conduct discharge. All they did change was the discharge. You get a red corduroy coat, a Ben Hogan cap, a pair of black pants, twenty five dollars and a train ticket with your choice of destination.

He didn’t go back to Chicago. He feared that would be send to a reformatory school, so he went to Detroit. It was a Tuesday when he arrived. There he found a theatre where on every Tuesday evening was a talent show. 25 USD was the first prize. Afternoon he wrote his first song and won. And next week won again, and then again and again, and finally got a contract from a little record label Fortune Records. His break trough hit was the „Bacon Fat” in 1956. He said about

When I came up with „Bacon Fat” I was travelling from Detroit to Memphis. That’s when I knew that I had to come up with a gimmick. So I stopped in Memphis and I got an egg and bacon sandwich – on toast! I’m driving and a lot of places where we used to travel, it was only a two lane highway so you’d see the cotton pickers on both sides and I’m driving and [starts tapping a beat on his thigh, starts humming] „Down in Tennessee… and the name of the dance is…” and I had the sandwich in my hand and there it came, „The Bacon Fat!”

He was there when Motown came alive, and also produced recordings for another little label Chess Records (Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Little Walter, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf). Worked together with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gay, The Contours, The Supremes, Ike and Tina Turner, Edwin Starr, Parliament, Funkadelic and many more. But in the 80s he slipped into poverty because of his alcohol and drug addictions, and even he lived as a homeless in Chicago too. His comeback album „Directly From The Streets” in 1990 refers to this tract. It was a funk rap album. Since then he made many fantastic albums with different bands and musicians, for example:

soul band The Diplomats of Solid Sound, jazz-funk-rock band Morning 40 Federation under pseudonym The New Orleans Hellhounds, Canadian country rock and roll band The Sadies, Chicago garage rock band The Goldstars, members of The Oblivians, Dirtboms, Dirty Three, Crime & City Solution, Cheater Slicks, Gories and same ones.

This is his greatest hit. Originally it was written for The Five Du-Tones in 1963.

His brand new album released this summer on Bloodshot Records

Q: Speaking of Jewish people, we hear you are a recent convert to Judaism. How did that come about?

AW: Well, I met a lady who I like real well and she’s from the Naftali tribe, she’s Jamaican. She’s a lawyer and she said „Well, Andre. If we gonna do something, you’ve gotta skin down!” [Laughs]

Q: Was it err.. painful?

AW: Well, it was an experience! I went to the doctor’s office and more in his best interview ever

Greetings from Motor City

DETROIT   The SROS Lords don’t spare their instruments. They are hard on them. In this raw romance they unite in pleasure of the garage synth punk. During the listening I have written these: Screamers, Madness, Mummies, Rancid Hell Spawn, Terrible Twos, Human Eye. If you know about these bands, that’s just enough.

„people come to the show get crazy, jump around, fucking throw my drums around, I don’t give a fuck. I was just want to get fucking wild.  Eat food, drink beer, smoke weed, get fucking crazy. That’s all I want people to know.”

The Stranger – What’s the new Dirtbombs like? Any surprises?

Mick Collins (founder, singer, guitar) – Oh yes. The new record is finally the bubble gum album I’ve apparently been talking about for years. People have told me I’ve been talking about this album forever. We’re going to call it Ooey Gooey Chewey Cablooey.

Here is the second song from it:

From New Records

The Underwear Heads were long-rumored to have been a made-up band. Evidence of their existence over the past 30 plus years had been reliant upon a picture sleeve for a single that never came with a record. The legend of the U-Heads extended far-and-wide as „the sleeve without a record.” Truth of the matter is that vinyl was pressed for the release, but due to a manufacturing error all copies were defective and were unceremoniously sent to the garbage dump while some sleeves managed to slip out into the wild.” (…) John instantly claimed he’d not heard someone utter the band’s name since 1983. (…) an early-generation master was located in Australia and the world is finally privileged to hear the Tangmania EP.” Six self-recorded songs from 1980 on 7” by Third Man Records

The RockFire Funk Express was formed by three afro-Americans brothers in Detroit. In 1973 they recorded two songs for a single. The release day is today. Because of the band changed name and style by influence of an Alice Cooper show. The new style is called proto-punk today (yes, they were the pre-Bad Brains) and the new name would be Death. The Columbia Records president Clive Davis implored the band to change its name, but they refused. So their first album (recorded in 1974) released in 2009. Their only one single was self-released before the next style and name change which was in 1977. The Death transformed into a gospel-rock band: 4th Movement. (The Bad Brains was founded in same year.) Then they transformed into a reggae band. The Death has become famous in 2009. The doc film is very coming soon

and the second album is on the way. But there is a new guitarist because one of them died in 2002. And then RockFire Funk Express before Death:

By the way, their story has begun 9.2.1964. On that day the Hackney brothers were sat down by their father to witness The Beatles’ first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The following day David found a discarded guitar in an alley…
