Paths without Directions

tys

Ty Segall – „Manipulator”
or „The Ballad of Sue Thumb” or „The Faker Wants Your Place”
album review

Paths without directions
Eclipse of the haunting icons
Construction without an aim
Rule the thoughtfully arranged game

Revolution without blood
Carrying the cross of the patience as a lug
Ease, experimentation and fury
Standing tall in the gown of liberty

A crawler without a grin
Before the verities had been scratched into the skin
Tried to keep calm
But the wires were shrieking under his fingers burning in napalm

Characters without faces
Ravel out the endless piles
In a race against the clock
Vagabond caravan swirling in burgundy rose petals

Skinny lover without a coyote fur
Creased beer bottles on a velvet seat cover
The princess kept the view
A calm nirvana in the desert of the last Sioux

Prosector without a lancet
Lying on Sunday afternoon’s blanket
Catch the aspects how your face reflects
In the wreath a dozen of singing cats

Paths by now have been woven by The Golden State’s son
Denoting ideas of this aeon
And the configuration slowly became
The seventh rose of the tamed

The new songs of Purling Hiss come to Dinosaur Jr to my mind, but this Philadelphian trio is better. I can’t endure J. Masics’ mewing.

Tim Presley writes songs and makes recordings under the name of White Fence. He has arrived from HC-punk to rock and roll of the 60s.  His music is like a mix of Rolling Stones and Velvet Underground. And now here is the glam rock too. At least in this track. „It’s basically about that moment you leave the nest, go through college, live on your own and all of that—basically me until the present, and all of my friends, and a lot of my generation, I guess. It’s very literal, but that was kind of the point. It’s kind of tongue in cheek, too. It’s half-silly, half-serious. If you have friends who have parents who are kind of rich and you see that and you think, „Well, I’m shit poor. What would I do with that money if I was in their position? How would I live if I made a really good salary and I could afford nice cars and a nice house?” I don’t know anyone of my friends that could afford to buy a house, at least in L.A. It’s kind of like, „Am I going to live in an apartment my whole life?” There’s a little bit of envy in it, but also not really. It’s fun to dream. It’s kind of like, „What would I do if I won the lottery?” But it’s also fucking sad because, like I said, am I ever going to own a house? I doubt it. It would be cool though. I feel like everyone could relate to that song. Except for the one percent.”*

3 black brothers underwent from funk to punk in Detroit, 1974. The trio was called Death. They self-released only one single before they transformed into a gospel rock band in 1977, but later they turned into reggae. The Death stayed fully unknown until 2009. After two archival albums this is the final one, featuring studio recordings from 1975, 1978, 1980 and 1992.

Mai Mai Mai is a solo project of Toni from frantic noise rock band Hiroshima Rocks Around and wacky pop duo Trouble vs. Glue. Mai Mai Mai is a travel in time and space: a mix of drone and ambient, techno beats, field recordings and soundscapes on the border between East and West. Delta is second part of his journey across the Mediterranean Sea. His fellows on this trip: a movie star junkie Gianni Giublena Rosacroce on clarinet, Donato Epiro on organs from occult psychedelic duo Cannibal Movie and Piovs on Moog.

The Black Death

deathhead

The first black punk band was formed by three brothers in Detroit as RockFire Funk Express. In 1973 they recorded two songs for a single that was released in last year by Third Man Records because they changed name and style just after the recordings under the influence of an Alice Cooper show. The new style is called proto-punk today and the new name would be Death. The Columbia Records president implored the band to change its name, but they refused, so their first album was released in 2009. It was recorded in 1974

Their only one single was self-released before the next style and name change. In 1977 the Death transformed into a gospel-rock band: 4th Movement. (The famous black hardcore-punk band, Bad Brains was founded in same year.) Then they transformed into a reggae band. Their recordings of Death were discovered in the second half of 00’s. The band has reformed with a new guitarist (the original died in 2002) and a documentary was made about their story.

The „vintage rocker” Michael Yonkers is one of the greatest hidden underground musicians like Seasick Steve, who won the Award for Best Breakthrough Act at his age of 66, or the 81 years old bluesman, Leo Welch with his debut album. Yonkers was born in Minneapolis in 1947. He has been making music since the early 60s, self-releasing some albums in the 70s, and stayed fully unknown until 2003. Then his unreleased album, the Microminiature Love, which was recorded in 1968 was released by de Stijl and Sub Pop. And boom. Fresh, fascinating psychedelic garage rock with a very unique sound, thanks to own made effects and a reshaped Fender Telecaster. It’s „like a fusion of stripped down Black Sabbath, The Troggs, Pere Ubu, and The Cramps.” It also comes the Stooges, the Godz and Joy Division to my mind. His previous albums would be reissued one after the other beside his new and unreleased materials.  Among his new stuff there are two collabs with the garage punk band, Blind Shake.

A marvellous acoustic chamber folk album The Borders Of My Mind with Jim Woehrle from 1974 is the brand new reissue by Drag City. Look!
