„It is often said that curiosity killed the cat, but what is less often stated is that the actual cause of death was the improper discharge of firearms by a poorly trained feline.”

Other issues of the series are How to Talk to Your Cat About Evolution, and About Abstinence.

You can find other great zines and more in Antiquated Future online store. E.g. there are a series about the movies of the 30s A Great and Terrible Golden Age.

There’s No God, Isten Is Here

Anthology of legendary Finnish metal fanzine ISTEN
804 page A4 hardcover book, 3 kilograms of heavy metal

isten1

will published by Svart Records (Finland). It’s in English.

„I craved life metal. Heavy metal for life. And “heavy”, for all you smart alecks out there, is not a prefix. Heavy metal is not even a genre. Heavy metal is a realm. Swear the oath. The Force is heavy metal. Mental Funeral is heavy metal. A Blaze in the Northern Sky is heavy metal. If it doesn’t work as heavy metal, it’s fucked, it fails, full stop.”

e.g. the Swiss Coroner in East-Berlin in 1990

ps: there’s no word Isten in the Finnish language, so they took a Hungarian dictionary, and seek out the equivalent of Jumala (God).

Old Hunzines’ Reviews – Revolting Cocks

There were lots of fanzine in Hungary in the late 80s and 90s. In our new series we cut album reviews out from these.

Straight Edge came from Győr. It was a relatively long-lived fanzine in the 90s. Its last issue(s?) was released together with Második Látás.

revco

revco SE#4 1994

The Revco comes forward with more and more shameless, looser and better music from record to record. Of course with such a crew as that is working with Jourgensen… There are the big part of Ministry, Chris Connelly (Ministry, Murder Inc, Pigface), Louis Svitek (M.O.D. , Mindfunk, Pigface) Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard, Pigface, Tomahawk), Timothy Leary, etc.  If Rod Stewart listened to his Do Ya Think I’m Sexy from Revco, then he surely made a mess under himself in his joy, or in his pain.

Szűkbőrű (Tight-skinned) was a short-lived fanzine in the early 90s in Miskolc.

Szűkbőrű # 1, 1991

breeders_clip1Kim Deal has fed up (with banana – how the Hungarians say), quit the Pixies for a while and teamed up with 3 crazy women. The outcome is a wonderful album. The influence of Pixies is perceptible here and there but it doesn’t typical. The record is lots ruder and harder than any Pixies album. I get excited from that how the guitarist caress the strings. And Kim proves: she is not only a good bassist but her voice is splendid and is also good at lyrics.

Note: The fourth crazy woman was a man. Breeders have started as a project of Kim Deal and Tanya Donelli (Throwing Muses) in 1990. Later Jospehine Wiggs (Perfect Disaster) joined them on bass. Immediately before the recordings the sound engineer Steve Albini recommended Britt Walford (Slint) as drummer, who was playing on the album under the pseudonym Shannon Doughton.

Második Látás (Second Vison) was one of the first Hungarian fanzines. It started as Mély Vágás (Deep Cut) in Debrecen in 1987 before two years the fall of communism. It produced a police investigation because to publish any printed matter without permission of Ministry of Interior was illegal at the time. So the title was changed to Második Látás in order to deceit the police. Then the editor Mihály Rácz moved to Budapest. Második Látás became the No 1. musical fanzine with tons of review.

ciccione_cutCICCIONE YOUTH – The Whitey Album, LP, 1988 (Blast First Records)

The Sonic Youth’s album which was released under the name of Ciccone Youth wouldn’t be a lucky case as the first meeting with the band.  The wily musical jokes of the album become understandable in the light of their previous albums. It is unbelievable impudence as they surrounded their Madonna cover with masterful fake disco songs, always make mess of it with overdrive and slides, and as the cold drum riffs and string tears whip the soul of Chichonne youth which is locked in electronics. The album alloys the old tradition of Sonic Youth with sound of the new era.
„If somebody does the same thing for 5 years, then he can be called hippe for 5 years… the time has come to begin a business career, that is humpie pumpie bumpy.”
