bassholes

At first there was the legendary Gibson Bros. in Ohio in the mid-80s. They played a unique mix of American roots music: blues, gospel, hill- and rockabilly with punk attitude. After split of the Gibsons the Bassholes were founded in 1992 by a “Gibson”, Don Howland (guitar) and Bim Thomas (drums). They’re the best blues punk band: crude, rude and harsh

After 4 years here is a new album with three covers: The Groundhogs – Express Man (1969), Wayne County & The Electric ChairsParanoia Paradise (1977) and Noh MercyCaucasian Guilt (1978). Boogieman Stew LP by Columbus Discount Records

Beside the Bassholes Bim Thomas plays in Puffy Areolas and This Moment in Black History. His solo project is the Obnox: weird garage blues soul punk with Tricky-like remixes.

Strange Attractor: fuzzy garage punk from a small town in Northern Ontario, Canada

„Total Shit” trilogy on the b-side. „Feel Like Total Shit” / „This is Total Shit” / „I’m Total Shit” – three songs that give you a 360 degree views from the dregs of modern life : making bad choices, feeling powerless against the will of people who make bad choices, and just generally having everything stacked against you and turning those bad vibes inwards. In the Strange Attractor land, when we point fingers we have to remember that we are simultaneously pointing at ourselves.”

The Ballantynes are a seven piece garage soul band. United by the common goals of dancing, drinking, and reveling in each other’s company.

Resistance is Useless

Sanity Assasins’ records between 1991-1999:

sanityassassins

The band born as a power trio with Keith Grave on fuzz bass, Adam Schwartz on guitars and Pete Riccio at drums and lead vocals in the second half of 80s in Connecticut, US. At first they played hardcore punk, then changed their style into surf punk in the mid 90s. The album is free.

Keith Grave’s new band is Atomic Buddha. It „simply picks rough RNR licks, psyched out vocals and the shittiest sound of punk, who knows, maybe they got sick of today’s garage rock bands…”

Toni Cutrone is a very active many-sided man. He runs the NO=FI Recordings and plays drums in the noise-rock Hiroshima Rocks Around and the wacky pop punk duo Trouble vs. Glue. Mai Mai Mai is his solo project. It is completely different than the mentioned acts. Debut album was mixed by Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu)

Best of Goons of Doom

The Australian Goons Of Doom is an authentic surf punk band. There is a professional surfer among the members, but luckily – at least for me – there is not surf rhythm in the music. Instead of it you can find Clash- or Ramones-like classic punk rhythms. Otherwise sometimes they seem a forced stupid punk band, but this free download collection of demos and outtakes is surprisingly naturally jolly, mainly acoustic and better than their official albums.

dirtbombs

Surprise! Dirtbombs. And the style is 70s bubblegum music! Yes, the entire LP. An old dream has come true, because the Detroit garage rockers intended to make a bubblegum album at first in 2003. Then the music changed to „car-commercial” pop rock. The second attempt was in 2007. At the time the album’s themes turned into too dark. And finally the success has arrived. Fanfares!

from Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-blooey! LP by In The Red

There were some Dirtbomb surprises in the past. My favorite one is the Ultraglide in Black (2001), a collection of soul, R&B and Motown covers with an own track. And there is their previous album, the Party Store (2011) featuring covers of early Detroit techno and house. By the way, two drummers are in the band.
