To be honest, I couldn’t really imagine until today how Jason Boyer’s songs would sound without the otherwordly death-invocating sound and the vocals coming from the deepest depths of the sea…or from behind the mirror. And as you can guess, the new songs on Asleep on the tracks indeed sound less fucked-up and less sinister then those from the early EPs, still the band managed to preserve a lot from the easily recognizable style that Jason had developed alone at his home. One of his songwriting strengths is for example balancing between bright and dark harmonies as if he’d put you on a rollercoaster; the other thing he had really mastered throughout the years is writing catchy songs… take the opening track, Rifle of peace or the overtly sixties-influenced track, Fall away and you could see why Nerve City is so fucking great.

It’s not easy to write a review about a band that has been a huge influence on me but I know how much a fan-written post could suck… so to conclude all the enthusiasm I haven’t  fully unfolded in this article, here’s a highly recommended album to get and if you dig it, order a vinyl from the Canadian label Sweet Rot Records!

The guitarist Kid Congo’s career

1976: At age of 16 he started The Ramones Unofficial Fan Club in Los Angeles.
1979: Started The Gun Club with Jeffrey Lee Pierce.
1980: Moved to New York, joined The Cramps and played on two albums.
1984: Rejoined The Gun Club, moved to London, founded The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, then The Fur Bible.                                                                                         1986: Moved to Berlin, joined Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds and played with Die Haut, Lydia Lunch and Anita Lane.
from 1990: Back to LA and founded the Congo Norvell > Moved to NY in the second half of 90s and founded the Knoxville Girls with Bob Bert – drums (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Boss Hog, Action Swingers, Bewitched, Chrome Cranks) and Jerry Teel – vocals, guitar (Honeymoon Killers, Chrome Cranks, Boss Hog) > He has founded Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds and started a project with the electronic musician Khan featuring Julee Cruise in 2001.

The Gories were an influential garage rock trio between 1986 and 92 in Detroit. In the beginning the members hadn’t any musical experience except Mick Collins, and they had to teach themselves how to play a very primitive rhythm & blues and 60s proto-punk influenced garage rock. Later Collins (guitar) has founded The Dirtbombs, Dan Kroha (guitar) founded the Demolition Doll Rods. And now here is a song, recorded at a house party in 1988

The Shaw Tapes: Live in Detroit 5/27/88 – LP by Third Man Records. There are some covers: John Lee Hooker, the Stooges etc.

The Gories are reunited since 2009, so they’re an influential garage rock band again.
