Acid in the House

ONYX was the avant-garde electronic duo of American songwriter and instrumentalist Judd Stone, and British vocalist and fashion model Beveur in the early 80s.

The only instruments they used are drums /percussion and synthesizers – except for a primitive drum machine track that is used on “Planet X”. All of the instruments are played, and there is no syncing or sequencers used on any of the recordings. The bass tracks are keyboard bass. And what they recorded it is still fresh:

COMPLETE WORKS 1981-1983 will release in June on Osaka based Franco-Japanese label MIND RECORDS.

Sex Judas

Sex Judas brought David Holmes to my mind. There was a summertime open-air party in Budapest, and he was late because of police problems. Hours went after hours. When he finally arrived at dawn I was drunk and smoked so much that I was not able to speak normally. And after he started to play I was just shouting and wallowing on the grass. Same feeling.

Norwegian producer Tore Gjedrem of Ost & Kjex channels his love of comix, bohemia and fascination with human vice, the unspoken, the Red Light districts, the alleys of the mind into his alter ego Sex Judas. He is no bad character but certainly says what it’s author cannot.

“I wanted to create a world where any musical idea is possible, wound together by the world and word of Judas, the ultimate sinner, reborn as a child of Venus.”

The album GO DOWN JUDAS was made with contributions by his friends in the Oslo scene as hometown legend Dj Pål Strangefruit Nyhus, composer Ole-Henrik Moe, jazzpianist Bugge Wesseltoft, Sidiki Camara from Mali playing that beautiful Ngoni, and multi instrumentalist Ivar Snuten Winther. Music inspiration ranges from Africa to 80’s NYC, from Bohannon to Quasimoto, from Norwegian New Wave to Acid House. It touches anything from blues, funk, disco and post-punk to IDM, acid house and electronic explorer music. And it’s a fuckin funny album:

The album comes as a 2 x LP and Digital release on OPTIMO MUSIC on May 25th. Distributed by Kompakt.

„just in time for the holidays”

from MARSHALL APPLEWHITE next mixtape Suburban Boredom, out now on little Scottish label CLANDESTINE RECORDS on cassette and digital.

He says „If EDM is drug music, I am the anti drug.” But there was another Marshall Applewhite who also said very particular things.

After divorce, without job, in the state of depression a gay music teacher from Texas, Marshall Applewhite, the reincarnation of Jesus Christ met a woman who used to got instructions from a monk Brother Francis from the 19th century. They identified themselves as the two witness of God which are described by John the Revelator in his nightmare after an overabundant late supper. Those two have authority of prophesy, have power over sky and waters, and able to strike the earth with plague. They also concluded that they had been chosen to full fill biblical prophecies, so they went to proselytization tour, but without any success. Maybe because

„It would be impossible to explain to you who we are, where we come from, and who we represent. If we tried, you would not believe us. We exist in another dimension, which does not allow for the use of currency.”

This quote is taken from one of their sacred messages. This one was found in their room in a Holiday Inn.

The essence of their catechism

We have superior souls which are from other space and planted into our human bodies. We are here to teach people how to reach the next level of existence. To reach this state need to strip all the human habits and emotions, for example must to jettison from the luxury of thinking too. And when the time will come a spaceship will come for the true believers and take their souls to the Heaven and everybody else will die in a final fire shower.

The time came in 1997 with Comet Hale-Bopp, when an amateur astronomer took a photograph which showed a large metallic object behind the comet. So the 39 members of Heaven’s Gate group prepared themselves for the journey as guidance by the spiritual leader.

At first everybody went and bought the same type of black Nike shoes – because of the Nike logo is similar to a comet, but a „Heaven’s Gate Away Team” armband, passport, driving licence, a 5 dollar bill and some change also were needed. The latter because so they will be able to call home.

Finally they released their souls from the human body with a mix of medication of epilepsy, vodka and apple sauce, and before the final exit they set plastic bags on their heads. But they all slipped on a banana peel. The photo of the comet with that UFO was fake. So they in vain took out insurance on alien abduction.

Black Metal in Soft Pink Mood

Extremity on the cube. A gay professor of literature
has made one of the most interesting cover albums ever, titled
Why Do the Heathen Rage?
(Electronic Profanations of Black Metal Classics)
The cover art looks as if it was designed by a Satanist Tom of Finland.
Because of it one of the label main distributors
has refused to carry the record.
Out now on Thrill Jockey Records (US)

The Soft Pink Truth is the solo alter ego of Drew Daniel, one half of Baltimore-based electronic duo Matmos. Mr. Daniel has taught the history of electronic music at the San Francisco Art Institute and a sound art seminar at Harvard. He now teaches in the English Department at Johns Hopkins University. He has written a book about industrial-experimental-electronic band Throbbing Gristle; released a similar album in 2004: Do You Want New Wave (Or Do You Want The Soft Pink Truth?) which consists of house covers of classic hardcore and punk songs; produced remixes for Björk, Herbert, Grizzly Bear, Dat Politics and more. And he is a black metal fan.

Black metal is a very special subgenre of heavy metal. It was born on 1 November 1982 by British band Venom. That day the band’s second album titled Black Metal was released. Strange fact, but Venom’s music was fast, harsh and primitive rock and roll rather than heavy metal at that time. It stood nearer Motörhead or Ramones, than Judas Priest or Iron Maiden. As special features their lyrics had dark, occult and devilish themes. But Venom’s music and texts were refined and gentle compared with the subsequent, more and more extreme bands. Today’s black metal bands’ music is just like a mix of noise of coffee grinders and sounds of a pig-killing. Unfortunately some bands and many fans take the Satanist rubbish seriously. But the blackest black metal bands are adherents of white supremacist and Nazi ideologies. The words beget acts. In this case their fruits: violence, church arson, suicide, murder. All these in welfare states of North-Europe mainly. And they say always: I did it only in self-defence.

SP1

And then this man resolved to make a peculiar electronic black metal tribute album. And who was the first man whom he invited to cooperate in this? Antony Hegarty (Antony and the Johnsons). By the way, the others: Jenn Wasner from indie-folk rock duo Wye Oak, Terrance Hannum from drone-metal band Locrian, his Matmos partner M.C. Schmidt, Irish composer and  vocalist Jennifer Walshe and more.

And the music? Well, it’s not an easy pop album. A Mix of electro-industrial, drum’n’bass, trip hop, house and EBM. It came Kraftwerk, Björk, Madonna and Leather Strip to my mind. Some covers are spiced with samples of house hits. The album requires a good piece of sense of humour. At first it was very strange, but as I listen to it repeatedly, so like it increasingly. But „Who in the world wants to hear this?” Nobody, basically. Black metal people aren’t going to like it because it’s faggoty disco, but actual dance music people aren’t going to like it because it’s weird people screaming about Satan.” (Drew said this in a Pitchfork interview.)

Venom + Sarcofago covers

The album not requires know of the original songs, but you can listen to those here. There you can read about some words about the bands: Venom, Beherit, Sarcofago, Sargeist, Darkthrone, AN, Mayhem, Hellhammer and Impaled Northern Moonforest.
