The statistics show that soldiers are in bigger secure than the civilians in Israel. Since January 2012, more than 2,500 rockets and mortars were fired to Israeli civilian area. In 2013, altogether 1271 various terrorist attacks were listed. Between 1989 and 2008 in all 804 people were killed by suicide bombers.
Yuval Haring (v/g): This is kind of like „the hit” in Israel. The world is well lost but let’s lie on the beach and have fun and fall in love because it doesn’t matter. We can just feel whatever we want.

Israel has been at war almost constantly since its foundation. The peace is very temporary and miraculous state in that region. The short peacetime are hot spiced with terrorist attacks. In 1991, on the occasion of Gulf War, Iraq launched 42 missiles to Israel, albeit it was not among the belligerents.
Yuval Haring (guitar/vocal): „I still remember, as a kid, sitting in our bomb shelter playing computer games while wearing a gas mask.” (Maybe was it a battle game?) „The world will end a thousand times, and we’ll still be here reading books, drinking coffee. We say, “Ze beseder” (It’s OK). That’s a very Tel Aviv sentiment. Nothing is so serious. There’s always another end after the end.” No wonder that dark visions arise.

Vaadat Charigim is one of the best and internationally most well-known Israeli rock bands. They have become famous with their debut album last year. It got unanimous appreciation by international music press. Even the fastidious (or snobbish) NME also gave 8 points from 10 on it.
The style is shoegaze: psychedelic, sometimes melancholic dreamy indie rock, which is hidden behind a distorted guitar curtain. And that guitar curtain is sometimes ruffled by electronic storms. The style has evolved in the British Islands in the 80s. Its greatest bands are the Scottish Jesus & Mary Chain, the Irish My Bloody Valenitne and the Ride from England. In the case of Vaadat Charigim add to this a singer/guitarist, who is blessed with voice of Morrissey and Ian Curtis (Joy Division). So it’s very English, but same time it’s 100% Israeli. And not just because the language is Hebrew. The feelings of the Israeli youth can be perfectly express with the chosen style: the desire for the peace, which is almost unnatural state in that region, where „it’s okay to be afraid.”
„Ein Nehama Ladoachim” (There is No Comfort for the Fading). „The song is kind of about growing up as a promoter in Tel Aviv and watching the scene changing and realizing it’s not the same as when I was young – but maybe it is and I’m just older and maybe I don’t know anything. I used to organize a lot of shows on rooftops and that disappeared. And we don’t have basement shows like they do in the States. because we don’t have basements. We have bomb shelters.”
The clip was shot in Tel Aviv first shopping mall, the Ditzengoff Center. Its construction began in 1972, but the mall was finished just in 1983. (Very Hungarian style pace.) In 1996, 13 people were killed there in a suicide bombing attack by a Hamas terrorist.

Joanna Gruesome is among the best indie rock band. The Welsh group combines garage punk with indie pop in a very unique style. There will be released two split records soon. And in both case Joanna Gruesome is the much better. Maybe there are some tactics on one side. The first split is a 12″ EP with lo-fi indie pop band Trust Fund from Bristol

I very like Total Punk Records, not just for their releases, but also for their name. Because it’s absolutely enough to write that Golden Pelicans‘ debut album by Total Punk, and everything is clear

Vaadat Charigim is the new band of Juval from TV Buddhas. The latter is a primaeval garage rock band. The new one is a shoegaze, exactly like the title of this post with the voice of Morrissey and Ian Curtis (Joy Division). The latter statement was declared by New Musical Express. The British magazine has given 8 points from the 10 for the Israeli band’s debut album which was released by Burger Records (US). It’s about how the Israeli youth feels themselves in their homeland where the war is so natural.
“Let’s become nothing together; let’s run away and disappear.”
– It’s a conversation between a guy and a girl.
I’ve had that kind of conflict living in Berlin — it was like leaving the real world here
in Israel and moving to a place that’s safe for young people to not do anything
or do whatever they dream. It’s kind of like disappearing, in a way.”

Abridged version of John Schooley’s legend
„Details of the early life of John Schooley are sketchy. Various sources place his birth either in Columbus, Ohio or Vancouver, British Columbia. We do know that his family moved to the rural enclave of Niangua, Missouri when he was still quite young. His parents were sharecroppers, barely scratching out a living from the rocky soil of the Ozark Mountains. The youngest of eight or possibly nine siblings, John Schooley did not take to farming, or, apparently, work of any kind. He could be found, often as not, shirking his chores to hunch over his guitar. He would stomp his foot on a board or on the front porch, frequently scaring the cows. The family Victrola was stocked with any 78″s that could be found, mostly by Jimmie Rodgers, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Doctor Ross, and Don Van Vliet. Most evenings the family tuned to radio station KWTO out of Springfield, to hear the “Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle with Chet Atkins and his Famous Guitar” perform as part of the syndicated “RadiOzark” network.
School was never to his liking and Schooley quit after graduating the fifth grade. Chafing at the dreary small town life of Niangua, Schooley left never to return. He rambled north to Columbia, Missouri. First trying to put together a hot-jazz combo along the lines of the then-popular Django Reinhart, but he was unable to find suitable musicians. Then, billing himself as “John Schooley and His One Man Band”, he rigged up a kick drum and hi-hat and began performing at “house frolics” and on the sidewalk in front of local record store Whizz Records. He met with minimal success. He was frequently chased away by the proprietor with a broom shortly after setting up. Being unwilling (or perhaps unable) to learn pop hits of the day, Schooley tried to force his listeners to dance to his own frequently atonal blend of blues and country, again with minimal success.

The musical scene in Columbia was so stagnant that when it was announced that bluegrass stars The Oblivians were coming to town, Schooley was able to secure the opening slot even though he had no band together at the time.” He founded the guitar, drum, and vocal trio The Revelators. Surprising success. „When the record, titled “We Told You Not To Cross Us” was released it caused a sensation in at least three Missouri counties and parts of Arkansas and Illinois. The Revelators were immediately rushed off to a whirlwind tour of Europe, which included performances for the as-yet not-dead Princess Diana and Archduke Ferdinand.”
After the break-up he went to Texas „and took whatever work he could find, from oil roughneck to hotel elevator operator. He eventually started another musical combo, the Hard Feelings” while he continued performing as one man band. He added harmonica, snare drum, and washboard to his kick and hi-hat apparatus and recorded some songs. „Voodoo Rhythm recently uncovered the tapes of these songs, long presumed lost, in an oil drum outside of Lockhart, Texas.” Album preview

The Family Fodder is among the funniest British bands ever. Since the mid-70s they have been playing really indie pop music, but literally! It’s independent from everything. So the best. Now here is a vinyl-only collection of 11 love songs, that have never before been released on vinyl. Alig Fodder says about it: „We collected all the love songs together without all the annoying instrumentals, dubs and solos.”

The audience say:
„Holy crap. It sounds like early Pixies went black metal.”
„It’s like the Dum Dum Girls and Dark Throne.”
The competent, Jorge Elbrecht reply:
„I love black metal as much as I love Sonic Youth and the ’60s pop stuff.”
I say: It comes the Liturgy to my mind.

Tim Presley (= White Fence) sings a very Velvet Underground-like song about Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus (37-68) who was the emperor of Roman Empire as Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (54-68) and committed suicide with the aid of his secretary. The imperator’s bust is on the cover. In accordance with order of the series the A-side artist suggests a band to the B-side. Presley picked the tour guitarist of White Fence, Jack Name (aka Muzz, Fictional Boys and John Webster Johns).

„San Francisco’s first and only rock ‘n’ roll band” was the slogan of CRIME. It was formed in 1976 and after 3 singles broke up in 1980. They were among the very first west coast punk bands, and played raw and loud rock’n’roll. In 1977 they began wearing police uniforms. In 1979 the Crime performed a show in San Quentin State Penitentiary. There they didn’t wear police uniforms of course, instead of it they wore prison guard uniforms. This LP release collects the three singles along with nine previously unreleased studio recordings from 1976 to 1980.
Post-Crime: In 1987 Sonic Youth covered „Hot Wire My Heart” on their LP Sister. – Johnny Strike (vocals, guitar) has become a writer. In 2001 he formed a new band, The Johnsons. They changed their name later to The Venus Hunters and eventually shortened it to TVH. – Crime was re-formed in 2005. In 2008 they recorded a new album of rare, older materials. – The drummer Hank Rank has become a film producer under his real name, Henry Rosenthal. His best known work is The Devil and Daniel Johnston. – The original drummer Ricky Tractor was the original singer of Flipper, because he was a very original person… – A photo book about Crime.

There were lots of fanzine in Hungary in the late 80s and 90s. In our new series we cut album reviews out from these.

Szűkbőrű (Tight-skinned) was a short-lived fanzine in the early 90s in Miskolc.

Kim Deal has fed up (with banana – how the Hungarians say), quit the Pixies for a while and teamed up with 3 crazy women. The outcome is a wonderful album. The influence of Pixies is perceptible here and there but it doesn’t typical. The record is lots ruder and harder than any Pixies album. I get excited from that how the guitarist caress the strings. And Kim proves: she is not only a good bassist but her voice is splendid and is also good at lyrics.
Note: The fourth crazy woman was a man. Breeders have started as a project of Kim Deal and Tanya Donelli (Throwing Muses) in 1990. Later Jospehine Wiggs (Perfect Disaster) joined them on bass. Immediately before the recordings the sound engineer Steve Albini recommended Britt Walford (Slint) as drummer, who was playing on the album under the pseudonym Shannon Doughton.
