We were recently approached by the band Ménage Détroit from Detroit, asking if we could write about their debut single. What we also wrote about >> HERE << in fact, we liked those two songs so much that we thought we would do an interview with them. Here it is:

What does Ménage Détroit mean? How to pronounce it exactly?

Ménage Détroit is pronounced like „ménage à trois.” Détroit is pronounced like „day-trois,” which is one of the nicknames people from the Motor City use for Detroit, which was settled by the French. We thought it was clever to loan that term from the French because it’s a bit tongue-in-cheek. It’s a little discreet for people who aren’t from here, but we don’t mind explaining it!

Looking at your Instagram pages, you are very into fine arts and DIY things. You learned this in school, or it comes from you?

We both really love when we can make something strictly by ourselves. It’s such a rewarding feeling when a project turns out exactly as you intended, and it makes us take peoples’ responses more to heart. We both grew up learning how to do things ourselves because neither of us had many resources to create in a traditional sense. Our only resources were art and music, so we take these influences and blend them with our own vision for this project. As frustrating as DIY can get, we like to still embrace mistakes that may occur.

Was Ménage Détroit always a two-member band, or did it just happen that way? I’ve heard a story the members of a 6-member band dwindled until two remained and that was the final line-up. Or another story when the bass player left and they realized that he was never really needed.

We actually started as a trio! Hence our play on „ménage à trois.” Our former bandmate played keys, as we were really going for the same sound as Coachwhips. Scheduling and life just got a little complicated, but we’re happy to do this project as a duo. It’s easier to get our calendars to match this way, and we split stuff 50/50. With this said, we are still trying to compensate for only having the two instruments. Maybe a bass player would help, or we could just make our sound even louder!

The sound is very unique, what is the reason for this crackling sound? Is there a trick or is everything just turned up to ten.

It’s a little bit of everything, actually. There’s a bit of technique, but there’s also accidents we like to embrace. This duality of DIY is such a driving force for us, as one of our intentions is to make palatable music- or music everyone can find something they like about it. The sounds we got on our recordings are a mix of deliberately turning everything up and inadvertently not cleaning the dust out of the four-track! We just want our sound to be authentic as possible.

This may be a naive or stupid question: You are from Detroit, which is an RnR / Rock city. Can you meet random famous musicians on the streets (forexample, somebody from The Gories or Wolf Eyes, some one from Kiss maybe hahaha!) ?

Not a stupid question at all! Detroit is a small town, and we’re fortunate to know, collaborate, and be supported by musicians we look up to. For instance, our favorite bar is owned by Johnny Hentch from one The Hentchmen. Joey’s recorded some demos with Timmy Vulgar, and we’re always looking for advice from the musicians who did and are doing exactly what we want to do.

Painters Tapes  has been one of the best casette labels for many years, their last years was particularly strong. How did you find each other?

Chuck from The Stools has always been a good friend. We both remember seeing The Stools really early on, and Joey’s other band, Toeheads, has gone on a couple tours with them. He’s been supportive from the start, and we’re happy to collaborate with him any chance we get. Painters Tapes is incredibly successful, and we’re proud to be friends with such a staple from Detroit.

Have you heard Klazo’s album ‘ Demik Dementia‘ (Big Nec Rec, 2022)? Also a guitar/drums duo like you, but the music  is completely different.

We just listened, and it rips pretty hard! It reminds us of some locals from Detroit, who are often compared to The Cramps and Jay Reatard.

Are you planning to tour Europe in the near future?

We would love to be able to tour Europe. We always say we’re willing to do anything to make it happen! It would be the best opportunity for us to reach more of an audience and get to meet people with the same taste and influences as us. Not to mention, hear more bands!

Your musical influences?

Both of us regard The Beatles as the most impactful band. For this project, we took influence from bands like Coachwhips, Oblivians, Jay Reatard, and The White Stripes, specifically. Local bands are always changing our style, too.

Current favorites?

We’ve been listening to a lot of The Kinks and CCR lately, and we’ve been introduced to a lot of cool bands on tour like Hell Tùpét and Delta 8! So many   bands put on great shows in the South.

Favorite horror movies?

Only Tex loves horror and slasher movies because Joey’s too scared hahaha. Her favorite is Nightmare on Elm Street, but some of her picks include Cape Fear, Midnight Lace, and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Have you seen ‘ Golden Glove ‘ french/german drama-horror movie (2019)? Very good movie, but fuckin brutal. Be carefule with it.

We’ve not! Not surprised it’s a brutal watch, though. I’m familiar with The Hands of Orlac, and that’s as wicked as it gets! I definitely need to explore some more German horror films, and I’ve yet to see many French films at all, actually.

How was the concert with French band Les Lullies?

Les Lullies was awesome. Those are guys who get on stage and do it right every single time. They’re such seasoned musicians, and we’re appreciative our local friends, Sugar Tradition, introduced us to them. It was one of the best shows we’ve played, and we learned that night even we can’t drink or smoke as well as the French do. Rock and roll is natural for them, and it was a pleasure to play and hang out with them for the night.

Do you know any Hungarian bands?

We’re familiar with Omega and The Moog, which are from the exact eras we try to emulate and derive our songs from. The 60s and the 2000s garage rock scenes are beloved by those of us in Detroit.

Detroit is rich with people who commit themselves to our music scene. As for our some of our favorites, Day Residue, Werewolf Jones, H8 Mile, and Tin Foil always put on great shows, and we have the pleasure of getting to see them on a real regular basis. There’s so many great acts in the works, too. Many Detroit bands are in two or more projects at once, which illustrates how much everyone’s willing to collaborate with one another. We value the camaraderie, so keep an eye out for them!

You’ re on tour now. how is going? Everything cool?

Tour has been going extremely well. We’ve seen a lot of old friends and made many new. Musicians are some of the most welcoming and supportive people, and we’re grateful they’ve let us stay with them, taken us to some of their favorite bars and restaurants, and shared music they dig with us. They’re the ones who are most into our sets, and it’s special when they share their music and their towns with you for a night. We can’t wait to hit the road again.

-How did you find this genre of music? I mean, this primitive garage with fuzz.

Elektronik tells:
In the early 2000s, I stumbled across The Stooges’ “1969” tape. It was great but more psychedelic. But when I heard The Monsters album – “Youth Against Nature” it was love at first note). Therefore, when the question arose of what the way to play, it was without a doubt.

– Does this music have an audience base in Ukraine? Because there are very, very few in Hungary. Psychobilly still has audience here, not a big one, but there is, but trash RnR / garage punk has almost nothing.

Maryna tells:
The Ukrainian -billy scene has been impacted by the war, with some bands disbanding or going on hiatus. However, organizers continue to hold fundraising concerts for Army Units featuring existing bands.

As for the garage, the situation is even worse. Those bands that existed before 2022 either disappeared or changed their sound to indie or psychedelic or post punk.

Metal and hardcore music are currently thriving in the underground scene, alongside street punk, post-punk, and electronic music.

– You also played in two other bands, P.M. before. Can you say something about that?

Maryna tells:
Actually, there were three bands before the “Pocket Monzzter”. Elektronik startedin 2009 withhis speedrock band “LOUD & DIRTY”. Transitioning, we together formed “Evil Bobblehead” in November 2014, refining the sound over the group’s four-year span. By the end of 2018, the band concluded with a final concert and birthed “Dementix” in March 2019, welcoming Oleh (aka Papanya) as a guitarist.

“Dementix” blended various influences with psychobilly, speedrock, and garage punk. Beyond the terms, we always dowhat we love!

As “Dementix” geared up to record thedebut album in early 2022, tragedy struck as the full-scale war has started and Oleh volunteered for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Leading to his passing in December 2022.Ultimately marking the end of „Dementix” existence.

– These two bands had a completely different sound than P.M. Why did you change sound and style?

Elektronik tells:
My fondness for garage music has always influenced. While the “Dementix” leaned towards -billy, I also ventured into creating songs outside the style of the main band.

“Pocket Monzzter”emerged in 2020 as a side project for fun, alongside our main focus on “Dementix”.And yet, the full debut of “Pocket Monzzter” as a standalone project occurred on June 5, 2021, at the “Heat The Beat” garage festival in Kyiv.

– What are your early influences and what are you listening to lately?

Elektronik tells:
It all started with punk rock: Exploited, Ramones, Dead Kennedys, KSU (polish punk).

Then psychobilly bands started to appear: Klingonz, Demented are Go, Calavera, Meteors, Batmobile etc.

Then everything was added like a snowball: Peter Pan Speedrock (my favorite band and for today), The Monsters, The Hives, The Sonics.

Now almost all the bands I listen to are garage punk (rock) from the 60s to the present day. For example, The Smoggers, The Gruesomes, Wild Evel & The Trashbones, Billy Childish and many others. All of them included in my playlist on Spotify „GaragePunk #1”.

– What are you listening to, dear ones, that is completely different from the music you play?

Maryna tells:
We have a diverse and eclectic taste in music. We enjoy projects where punk rock is combined with ethnic or country music. Such as “Gogol Bordello” or “The Goddamn Gallows”.  Also, we like fun music in style of“The Kings of Nuthin’”. We’re fans of Ukrainian rock’n’roll bands from Soviet times like “Braty Hadiukiny”, “Vopli Vidopliassova”. Good grunge can be moody too. Sometimes you want harder and faster – then thrash metal, speedrock, classic hardcore.I also like old-fashioned pop stars like Madonna, Elton John and “The Beatles”.And Elektronik likes “Bob Marley & The Wailers”.

– It’s very strange that we are neighbors, but apart from you, I don’t know any other Ukrainian band. I know Latvian, Estonian, Russian, Georgian bands, but not Ukrainian. Can you recommend a couple? It can be metal, punk, whatever.

It wasn’t easy to makea few recommendationsbecause there are so many bands))!Ukrainian alternative scene is broad, and there are many worthy representatives in each style. Below is an unfairly short list, but hopefully it will help to form an idea of the different trends. We are not fans of very heavy music, but it is also strongly represented in Ukraine, you can find tens of bands in each metal style.

Garage – “Dr Jail and Mr Hype”.
Indie, garage – “The Tea Ship”, “Rihter” (Ріхтер).

Post punk, new wave – “SadSvit”, “Farba Kingdom”, “Zagreb” (Загреб).

Oldschool psychobilly – “Pest Control”, “The Twilighters”.

RnR, psychobilly – “Outer Space”, “The Troubled”, “Rude Jokes”.

Rockabilly – “The WiseGuyz”.

Surf rock – “Waikiki Makaki”, “Amphibian Man”.

Art & Sci-Fi Music – “Kraken Landau”.

Swingcore orchestra – “The Hypnotunez”.

Street-punk – “Stinx”, “Cios”, “Bezlad”.

Hardcore – “Mauser”, “Death Pill”, “Vidsich” (Відсіч).

– Do you know Hungarian bands?

Yes, several. Heard the band “The Hellfreaks”.And alsosaw live performances of “Gorilla”, “Mystery Gang”, “Shadowbirds”, “The Silvershine”, “Ati EDGE”in Kyiv on the festival “Ukrabilly Bang”.

– Kyiv is a huge city. What was the musical life like before the war? Underground clubs, squats? Did the tours of Western bands affect Kyiv?

Before the war, Kyiv boasted a vibrant cultural scene with events to all tastes and budgets, including a thriving underground music communityoffering weekly concerts spanning different genres.

“Ukrabilly” organizers held frequent parties and large festivals: “Wicked Party”, “Atomic Snow Ball”, “Blaxie Rumble”, and an international festival “Ukrabilly Bang”. Although the war has impacted the frequency of these events and the number of active bands, some festivals continue in a fundraising format.

Previously, Kyiv attracted internationally renowned bands and alternative stars for regular performances. Despite many Western bands expressing now support for Ukraine during tours, visits to the country have become a rarity. Noteworthy exceptions include the band “Tiger Lilies”, who performed in Lviv and Kyiv in 2023 and have upcoming concerts planned in Ukrainefor May 2024.

– You recorded your last two minialbums during the war. Maybe can you do gigs as well? Could you tell me how is your life now in Kyiv?

Despite the challenges of the war, cultural life in Ukraine has persevered. After an initial period of disruption, clubs, bars, and cultural institutions began to reopen in second half of 2022, with events even being held in underground stations.

While the format of performances has shifted to focus on fundraising for the war efforts, artists continue to create. Musicians perform on the front lines, boosting morale. During the blackouts in 2023 organizers made events in between power outages, used gasoline generators in emergency cases.

During early 2022 we didn’t have the strength and psychological resources to create. But then transitioned from stagnation to a renewed desire to make music, refusing to let the enemy win!

Throughout 2023, our mood changed to darker. We lost several friends who were killed as soldiers in the battles. Many people from our environment have left Ukraine forever. Many music bands broke up. Undoubtedly it left the mark, with a heavier sound and more serious themes in latest album “Bad Dreams”.

We performed three times in 2023 in Kyiv. And there is hope to perform here soon in mid-May as well.

Today, life in Kyiv is generally comfortable, with all the infrastructure in place. Albeit with restrictions and the ever-present threat of rocket attacks. It’s always up to fate.

– Elektronik (sorry, but I don’t know his real name) was a soldier, did he have to enlist?

No, Elektronik (real name Vadym) didn’t serve and doesn’t have military profession. Now priority is given to trained soldiers, contractors, volunteers with physical fitness, and people with specific experience in professions that the Army can directly use. For now, we’re both trying to be as useful on the home front as we can be as civilians.

– What is the general opinion of Hungary and Hungarians in Ukraine? I only ask because Viktor Orban and his government are very pro-Putin. I am afraid that this will poison the relationship between the two countries for a long time. Which is very sad. My sister and her husband lived and worked in Kyiv for years. My nephews went to kindergarten there, the older one even went to school there. They loved living there and had no conflicts because they were Hungarians. But the same can be said about my friends from RNR666 who traveled to Ukraine for two weeks in the mid-2000s and partied a lot there. They also had only positive experiences. Well, I’m afraid that this will change because of fucking Orban…..

Wow!It was interesting to know about your connection with Ukraine and Kyiv in particular! We’re glad about the only positive experience! Ukrainians really are friendly people:).

To rate the attitude of ordinary Ukrainians towards Hungarians is difficult without comprehensive surveys. However, personal observations and social media interactions suggest a neutral stance, with an understanding that relations are currently strained.

Good news, open-source surveys indicate a growing awareness among Hungarians regarding Russia’s unfair and terrifying actions against Ukraineand shows a decline in trust towards Orban. Importantly, Ukrainians recognize and appreciate the assistance provided by both Hungarian authorities and citizens to those displaced by the war.

Hé, te! Elég Butthole Surfers-fanatikus vagy ahhoz, hogy tudd: készül egy dokumentumfilm a Butthole-ról? Na, mi megkerestük a film producerét Noa Durban-t, hogy személyesen ő meséljen a kétezerhuszas évek legjobban várt doksijáról.

– Kérlek, először is mesélj magadról! Csak nem egy főállású Butthole Surfers dokumentumfilm producer vagy?

–  A nevem Noa Durban, Los Angelesben élek. Korábban több művész, nonprofit szervezet üzleti szakértőjeként és tanácsadójaként dolgoztam, mielőtt tavaly betársultam Tom Stern mellé, akivel közösen ezt a doksit készítjük. A Butthole Surfers Movie amúgy az első filmem, és igen, ez a projekt jelenleg kitölti minden időmet.

– Hogy jött az ötlet, hogy Butthole dokumentumfilmet készítsetek?

–  Tom Stern, a rendező-producer a Butthole Surfers-tagok barátja amióta a nyolcvanas évek közepén videóra vette a banda CBGB-s fellépését. Együttműködtek aztán több projektben, például az Entering Texas című rövidfilmben, vagy az egész estés Freaked című moziban, továbbá Tom készítette Paul Leary számára  a Do You Like To Eat a Cow videót. Aztán Paul Leary és Gibby Haynes azt mondták neki, hogy ha valaha készül róluk dokumentum, akkor azt akarják, hogy ő csinálja azt – és most bele is kezdett! Tom mindig is akart egy filmet a Butthole Surfers-szel. Nagyfilmje, a Freaked, eredetileg Butthole Surfers-ihlette történet akart volna lenni, de az élet úgy hozta, hogy ebből nem lett semmi. Mostanra a Butthole olyan életszakaszához érkezett, ahol megérettnek érezték az időt egy róluk szóló film elkészítéséhez, amely egyben Tom és a banda több, mint három évtizedes együtt munkálkodásának kulminációs pontja is lehet. Gyártásvezetőnk, Paul Rachman ismert zenei videó- és dokumentumfilm-producer, ezen kívül a Slamdance Filmfesztivál szervezője. A zenekarral is közvetlenül együttműködünk, akik teljes archívumukhoz hozzáférést biztosítottak nekünk.

– Mesélj kérlek a filmről, hogyan képzeljük el? Időrendiséget követsz, vagy lesz valami speciális dramaturgiai íve? Lesznek benne olyan exkluzív tartalmak, mint soha sem látott videók, fotók, különleges megszólalók stb?

–  A filmet leginkább egy musicalhoz hasonlóan képzeltük el, a mélységes mély archívumból építkezve, ahol a zene adja meg a szerkezetet. Erre a gerincre építjük rá a legjobban sikerült interjú-részeket, régi videofelvételeket, animációkat, grafikákat és számos szürreális dramatizált jelenetet, hogy mindezeken keresztül meséljük el a zenekar viharos történetét: kevésbé időrendhez kötve, sokkal inkább kísérletező módon – az ő anarchikus szellemükben.

– Az instagramod alapján szoros kapcsolatban vagy a zenekar tagjaival.  Úgy tudjuk, hogy a zenekartagok már nem mind Texasban élnek. Sokat utazol a film készítése során, mintha egy road-moviet forgatnál? Mi volt a legemlékezetesebb pillanat az eddigi forgatások közül?

–  Igen nehéz egyetlen emlékezetes pillanatot kiválasztani az egészből, de személy szerint én azt választanám, amikor Gibby megmutatta, hogyan dolgozik a megafonnal, és amikor együtt improvizáltunk. Hatalmas élmény volt számomra – „zenélni” (vagyis inkább: zajolni) Gibbyvel. Rengeteget utaztunk mindenfelé az Államokban, a legjobb interjúk, történetek után kutatva. Hét állam számos városában forgattunk és még legalább 3 további államot be fogunk járni a forgatásból hátralévő pár hónapban. Ebből úgy tűnhet, hogy csupán utazgatunk és bulizunk, de valójában arról van szó, hogy az emberek könnyebben kötélnek állnak, ha a stáb utazik hozzájuk, ahelyett, hogy összetoboroznánk őket egy helyre a forgatás kedvéért.

– A Butthole basszusgitárosát, Jeff Pinkus-t nem láttuk a trailerben, vele mi a helyzet?

– Jeff Pinkus, a legendás basszusgitáros és kedves barátunk szintén támogatja a projektet, de egyelőre úgy döntött, hogy kimarad belőle. Ettől függetlenül, minden tiszteletünk Jeffé és boldogok lennénk, ha résztvenne a filmben.

– Mesélj a trailerben látható mormotákról, légyszi és külön érdekel, hogy hogy a picsába vettétek rá őket, hogy gitározzanak?!

– Az állatok, melyeket a promóvideónkban láthattatok, sajnos csak digitális technika szüleményei. Paul Leary ötlete volt, hogy bizonyos koncertjelenetekben földi kutyák játsszanak, szóval az ő tiszteletére kerültek bele a mormoták a trailerbe. Ugyanakkor az is lehet, hogy valódi, betanított mormotákat láthattok majd a filmben, Butthole Surfersnek öltözve: meglátjuk…

– Mesélnél arról a Gibby bábúról amely a „Gibby nemrég felfedezte, hogy részben askenázi zsidó!” című videóban is szerepel?

–  Azt a Gibby bábut Drew Massey bábművész készítette. Ez a bábú az egyik segédeszközünk a Butthole-sztori életre keltéséhez. Mivel a ’80-as, ’90-es évek felvételeinek zöme szar felbontású VHS videó, megpróbálunk minél kreatívabbak lenni történeteik újrafeldolgozásában, szóval, nem akarjuk beszélő fejek tömkelegével ellaposítani a filmet, inkább arra törekszünk, hogy átadjunk valamennyit a Butthole-ra jellemző őrületes alkotó energiákból, emiatt lesznek a bábok, a földi kutyák és a többi, amiket majd láthattok!

– Studio albumuk 2001-ben jelent meg utóljára. Te, mint amolyan hivatalos Butthole-szakértő, mit tudsz: lesz még valaha új Butthole album?

–  Ami egy új Butthole Surfers lemezt illet, azt mondom: sohase mondd, hogy soha! Amit elárulhatok, az annyi, hogy érdekes dolgok vannak mozgásban jelenleg is, amíg beszélgetek veletek…

– Emlékszel amúgy, hogy mikor fedezted fel magadnak először a zenekart? Láttad őket valaha élőben színpadon játszani?

–  Sajnálatos módon 1993-ban születtem, és időm legnagyobb részét szülőhazámban, Izraelben töltöttem, így sohasem láttam őket élőben! Ez is az egyik oka, hogy nagyon motivált vagyok ennek a filmnek az elkészítésében. Meg akarom mutatni mindenkinek a „Butthole varázslatot” mindazoknak, akiknek erre nem volt esélyük valós időben. Szóval, én kb egy évtizede nagy rajongójuk vagyok. A Ministry Jesus Built My Hotrod-jában „találkoztam” először. Gibby-vel, aztán, amikor mélyebbre ástam és „felfedeztem” az egész Butthole Surfers-t: csak néztem! Rendkívül szerencsésnek érzem magam, hogy ezen az álomprojekten dolgozhatok!

– Véleményed szerint amúgy miért fontos 2022-ben filmet forgatni a Butthole-ról?

– A Butthole Surfers egy óriási hatású, ám tragikusan aluldokumentált zenekar. Úgy érezzük, hogy itt az ideje, hogy egy filmmel hozzájárulhassunk ahhoz, hogy a Butthole elfoglalhassa méltó helyét a rock-/punk-/zene- és persze Texas mozgóképes történelemben egyaránt!

– Mesélj, amúgy, hogy van Gibby manapság? Mivel tölti a napjait?

– Gibby remekül van, Brooklynban él a feleségével és fiával. Mostanában főleg a kisfiú baseball-karrierjét egyengeti. 2020-ban kiadott egy remek gyerekeknek-fiatal felnőtteknek szánt könyvet Me and Mr Cigar címmel, valamint rendszeresen turnézik és fellép Paul Green Rockiskolájában.

– Ha egyszer elkészülsz a filmmel van már újabb ötleted, hogy miről/kiről készítenél újabb mozit?

– Részemről, egy másik zenekar, amelyet jobban meg szeretnék ismertetni a anygközönséggel, az a Type O Negative – egy másik legendás együttes, akik sokkal több elismerést érdemelnének, mint amennyit eddig kaptak. Tom és én ezen kívül gyűjtögetjük az ötleteket egy horror filmhez is.

– Hogy tervezed, mikor lesz látható a film? Tudnak valahogy segíteni neked a BS rajongók, hogy a filmed elkészüljön, illetve pontosan mire van szükséged a film elkészüléséhez?

– Egy nagyobb fesztiválon, mint például a Sundance, vagy az SXSW-n, szeretnénk bemutatni a filmet, nagyjából jövő ilyenkor! Még mindig gyűjtünk az utómunkára, hogy szeptemberre egy nyersvágással rendelkezhessünk, akkor lesz ugyanis a jövő évi fesztiválok előválogatása. Ha a rajongók, akik ezt olvassák, képesek bármennyivel hozzájárulni a film elkészültéhez, nagyon hálásak lennénk! Az adományok az USÁ-ban adóvisszatérítésre jogosultak, a The Film Collaborative-en keresztül. Adományozni pedig ITT TUDTOK!

– És azt tudtad-e, hogy az RN666 Magazin egyszer régen kiadott egy split kislemezt, RNR666 Records néven és örök tiszteletünk jeléül „MUSIC FOR GIBBY” lett a kiadónk mottója? A 250 darab lemezből a #001-es példányt azóta is őrizzük, hogy egyszer eljutassuk azt Gibby-nek. Válalnád-e ezt a szent küldetést, hogy átadod neki a lemezt és ezt a pillanatot akár meg is örökíted számunkra?

– Örömmel! És ígérem, hogy megörökítjük majd számotokra Gibby reakcióját is! Jöhet a postacímünk?

Hey You! Are you Butthole Surfers-fanatic enough to know: there’s a documentary coming soon about the Butthole Surfers? Well, we approached the producer Noa Durban to tell us everything about the most anticipated punk documentary of the two-thousand-twenties.

– Please, introduce yourself! You are a full time Butthole Surfers movie producer?

– My name is Noa Durban, I live in Los Angeles. I have been a marketing strategist and consultant for various artists, nonprofits, and other businesses up until I teamed up with Tom Stern last year. The Butthole Surfers Movie is my first, and I am producing it full-time.

– How did you come by the idea to make a documentary about BS? Who else is involved in the works?

– Director/producer Tom Stern has been friends with the Butthole Surfers since he first shot their CBGB’s show in the mid-eighties in NY while he was in film school. He collaborated with them on multiple projects like the short Entering Texas, the feature film Freaked, and his recent video for Paul Leary – Do You Like to Eat a Cow. Paul Leary and Gibby Haynes told him that if there would ever be a documentary about them, they’d want him to do it – and so, now he is! Tom has always wanted to do a film with the Butthole Surfers. His movie, Freaked, was originally meant to be a Butthole Surfers narrative film! But life happened, and it never got made. Now the Buttholes are at a point in their lives where they are ready to have such a film made, so this movie would be like a culmination of Tom and the band’s relationship that has spanned more than three decades. Our executive producer, Paul Rachman, is a notable music video and documentary director/producer, plus a co-founder of the esteemed Slamdance Film Festival. We are also working in collaboration with the band who has been kind enough to offer us free access to their catalogue.

– Please help us imagine the movie! Will it follow a timeline or a dramaturgical structure? Will it contain exclusives, like never before published video footages or photos, special guests etc?

– We plan on structuring this doc more like a musical, leaning into the songs from the band’s deep library and letting the music provide the structure. Into that spine we will add the best of our exhaustive interviews, archival footage, cutting-edge animation and graphics, and surreal reenactments, to tell the story of the band and their tumultuous history, but less chronological and more experimental – in the anarchic spirit of the band.

– What was your most memorable moment from the shootings so far?

– It’s really hard to choose a single moment out of this incredible journey, but personally, I think it was off-camera when Gibby showed me how to work the bullhorn and we improvised some stuff together. It was a hugely significant moment for me – „making music” (or noise) with Gibby.

– Looking at your Instagram, you are close to members of the band. As we know, not all of them live in Texas anymore, Gibby, for example, lives in Brooklyn perhaps? Do you travel a lot like you’re shooting a road movie, or summon the band members somewhere?

– We have been travelling a fair amount throughout the United States scouring for the best interviews and stories. We have shot in multiple cities and 7 states, and we are expecting to shoot in at least 3 additional states in the next couple of months. It might sound like we are taking a leisurely road trip, but that’s really not the case – it’s just that people are far more inclined to participate if you come to them instead of asking them to come to us.

– Jeff Pinkus is not mentioned neither on the project site nor in the trailer. What about him?

– Jeff Pinkus is a dear friend and legendary bass player – he has been supportive of our project but has chosen to sit it out. That being said, we have nothing but love and appreciation for Jeff and we would be more than happy to include him in the film if and when he’s ready.

– How the hell was the giant groundhogs made and did it play the guitar (saw in the trailer)?– The groundhogs shown on our sizzle reel were, unfortunately, digitally composited. Paul Leary has requested that we use groundhogs for some live action reenactments, so we paid him homage by adding them to the sizzle. You might see some real-live trained groundhogs wearing tiny Butthole Surfers outfits in the film – stay tuned…

– We saw the Gibby puppet and the ‘Gibby recently discovered he is part Ashkenazi Jew!‘ clip. Could you tell us more about this puppet?

– The Gibby puppet was designed by superstar puppeteer Drew Massey. It is one of many creative tools we will use to bring the Butthole Surfers’ story to life. Because most 80s and 90s footage is low-res personal VHS recordings, we really want to be creative in our recreations of their tales. We also don’t want to just show a string of „talking heads” interviews and we strive to make a movie that captures some of their insane creativity,  so puppets and groundhogs and anything else goes!

– Their last album to date is from 2001. As an expert on BS, can you tell us if there will ever be another one?

– Regarding a new Butthole Surfers release – never say never! There are interesting things in motion as we speak…

– Why is it so important to make a documentary about BS in 2022?

– The Butthole Surfers are influential, and well-respected, but they’re criminally under-documented. We feel that the time has cometo cement their rightful place in rock/punk/music/Texas history.

– Perhaps you remember the moment when you became their fan. How did it happen? Have you ever seen them playing live?

– Unfortunately, I was born in 1993 and spent most of my life in my home country of Israel, so I never good to see them live! That’s one of the reasons I’m very driven to make this movie come to life. I want to expose people who haven’t had the chance to experience the full Butthole Surfers experience in real time to their magic through this film. I have been a huge fan of theirs for about a decade now. I learned about them via Jesus Built My Hotrod. Gibby’s vocals had me hooked and I was blown away when I dug deeper and „discovered” the Butthole Surfers. I feel extremely fortunate to work on this dream project!   

– Please tell, how is Gibby doing nowadays? How is he spending his days, what projects is he into?

– Gibby is doing great, living with his wife and son in Brooklyn. He is mostly busy being a baseball dad to his kid. He also released a really great young adult/children’s book called Me and Mr. Cigar in 2020, and he’s been touring and performing with Paul Green’s School of Rock in recent years.

– When this movie is done, do you have any ideas for another one?

– Personally, as far as music docs go, another band I would love to explore are Type O Negative – another legendary underrated band that deserves a lot more credit than it gets. Tom and I are also spitballing ideas for a horror narrative feature film.

– According to plans, when do you intend to premiere the film? Could BS fans help you in some way to achieve this goal and what do you need exactly for making/finishing the movie?

– We intend to premiere the film at a festival like Sundance or SXSW aruond this time next year! We are still fundraising to start an editing room ASAP and get a rough cut done by September, in time for festival submission. És még valami, csak, hogy érthető legyen a *klazomániára vonatkozó kérdésem. A zenekar neve egy betegségre utal, a klazomániára ami egy tourette szindrómához hasonlító idegrenceri baszás, csak itt a beteg kényszeres kiabálástól szenved, ami szintén tikkelés szerűen jelentkezik. Úgy tűnhet, hogy a betegnek fizikai fájdalmai lehetnek, pedig a kiáltozása nincs összefüggésben fizikai kellemetlenséggel. Kiválthatja agyvelőgyulladás, csak úgy mint szén-monoxid-mérgezés, vagy alkoholfogyasztási zavar. A görög eredetű klazo szó jelentése kiabálás/ordítozás. Kellemetlen egy nyavalya lehet….

Csühes Pali – When, whom and why did you start Klazo?

Jesse Allison  – I formed Klazo in the spring of 2015 with Rob Brake (vocals, guitar) after I got kicked out of another two piece band for going on a trip to Peru. I formed this band because I wanted to be in a band. 

 CS.P. – Unfortunately I am a jerk. Does it make sense (to make a band)?  

J.A. -It makes sense to form a band if you are going to have fun , release records , play with bands you love , tour and not take people’s shit. You are not a jerk Pali, at least not yet.

CS.P. – As it is common known, you are a duo. You are doing it on purpose, or it is because there are no more rock and roll guys around there?

  J.A. -It’s true there is no one in London rock n roll enough to handle the punishment this band gives  except for myself and Rob. 

CS.P.– What is going around in London nowadays? I wonder what kind of people living there and what are they doing on weekdays, because the first thing I have heard about this place is your band.

J.A. -This is a very interesting question and one that could possibly land in me in jail for treason. I will answer it anyways. London Ontario is the self proclaimed Music City. We have also granted ourselves the title of  being a music  UNESCO Heritage Site due to  historical events and  local talent it has produced. We have a wide variety of music , Hip Hop, Metal, Pop Country, Rock Cover Bands and Cringe. The  downside of this is that so many of the old ruins are now parking lots  , we have very few small venues left to play shows.  Help us! 

CS.P. – To be honest I was looking around on the musical scene of London. There were two major cultural things I have found: one was Justin Beiber and the other is Nihilist Spasm Band ( i have an Lp from them, one of the most extreme parts of my collection). For me it looks really interesting, as a local how do you see this diversity? 

J.A. – First off Bieber is from Stratford Ontario (1 hour north) that’s where he grew up. The Nihilist Spasm Band are the pioneers of Experimental Noise who started in the mid 1960s and had a residency at the York Hotel (currently condemned) .The group had still performed on occasion pre pandemic with some of the original members. I saw them once and  chatted with Art Pratten but we were both hard of hearing at the time. I saw their records in Japan once too.

CS.P. – I know you run a label (It’s Trash! Records). Which band is from Killed by Meth compilations what are REALLY fucked up with the meth?

J.A.  – You’ ve heard of my label? Sorry about that . Over the course of the series we call Killed By Meth there has been about 72 bands with over  200 different musicians featured. With this comes a  diversity of people who live clean and those who do not. I personally haven’t heard of anyone that have gotten heavy into methamphetamines per say . However I do know that there was a singer who passed away suddenly from an overdose a few years ago. He was a talent.

CS.P. – Do you have any Hungarian connection? There was a huge migration to Canada during/after World War II. I wonder if there was any Hungarian cultural effect on rock and roll around your place. 

J.A. – This is my first Hungarian connection , I appreciate you reaching out. The only Hungarian culture I’ve experienced is a fantastic restaurant here in London that’s been around for over 60 years. The original founder of the restaurant was a endearingly perverted lady whos husband mysteriously vanished. Try their goulash!

CS.P. – Do you like your neighbours? 

J.A. – Yes I like them. They do not listen to punk though . 

 CS.P. – I hope there will be a sixth Killed by Meth compilation. 

J.A. – I will not be releasing any more Killed By Meth records however I heard some rumblings there may be a #6 being  released from an unknown figure. Isn’t this how the Killed By Death records ended up? 

CS.P. – We havent heard about the Meth Kid since the 3rd episode.

  J.A. – The meth kid? Ohhh do you mean the kid on the killed by meth records hahah! I believe he died / escaped the trailer meth label explosion on the cover of KBM #4 . Could this be predicting the future of more album covers ?? The dog was killed and eaten by the family during KBM #3. I heard dog is popular food in Eastern Europe? 

CS.P. – No, that’s fake. We don’t eat dog. Gypsies eat hamster, moles, gopher, crows, all kinds of shit. Hungarians eat horses (only for sausage!) and we have a strange dish called ‘pacal’ made from the stomach of cow. Not my favorite….

J.A. – I see my western ignorance has perturbed you. Don’t get me wrong I’ve put alot of questionable meats in my mouth. No pun intended.  Pass the Pascal Csuhes! 

 CS.P. – Do you like Motörhead?

J.A. – Yes. I saw Motörhead , The Damned and Girls School in Glasgow , Scotland while backpacking through the UK when I was 28.  A bunch of Scotties got me drunk at the hostel I was staying at and I still chat with one of them to this day. 

Cs.P.– Have you got any trick to do Klazo’s dirty sound, or just plug your guitar on and play at 10 vol?

J.A. – Oh the inevitable, talking about gear! .ill keep this short and sweet. An old Ampeg B-25  for the low end , a Fender Deville Combo for the squeals and solos. Yelling . I play an old 4 piece  Japanese Stencil kit that’s a tangerine sparkle and just try not to suck. 

 CS.P. – At 2019 you did an American tour ‘They kalled it Amerika’. How was it? I think this was your last tour before this covid shit?

J.A. -The „They Kalled It Amerika” tour I’d say was our longest tour , farthest tour and maybe the funniest tour Klazo has done.  It was 16 days with 13 shows in 9  states. Looking back the name of the tour is ironic considering what has happened in America the last couple of years. We were supposed to meet up with our local friends band in Memphis but due to unexpected circumstances they had to drop…last minute . This always makes booking a tour that much more rewarding. The dates got filled and the bands and people in their scenes were super accommodating. We only had one show get cancelled at a VFW Hall in Knoxville, TN. so we just made our own fun. Is there ever a bad day on tour? Nope.

 CS.P. -How do you see the future of small undergound touring bands like you?

J.A. – It takes a certain kind of stupid to book a DIY tour,  especially when going to a different country. Living with your friends in a van, getting lost and partying everyday is never dull. I’ve met so many friendly strangers along the way and for that I’m lucky. 

CS.P. – Have you ever met a person who suffering from *klazomania?

J.A. -I can’t say I’ve met an individual clinically diagnosed with Klazomania. I have met alot of close talkers, loud mouths and smoke inhalers though. 

CS.P. – If i know well, you have got a radio show. Tell me more about this, from where we can get the episodes?

J.A. -I’ve been doing radio since 2010, but I’ve been doing It’s Trash since the beginning of 2013. I’ve managed to do over 180 episodes and you can listen live on the radio station or on mixcloud at your own pace, brought to you by Radio Mutation. Lots of other great shows on there as well..

CS.P. – Favorite old and new bands?

J.A. – I love old random Killed by Death punk alot. The weirder and more alienated the better. There are so many great new bands out there , I cannot list them off. You could hear them all on my radio show though!  

CS.P. -Favorite 2 piece bands?

J.A. – The only two piece band that comes to mind would be  Montreal Quebec’s  Deja Voodoo circa  1981-1990 . They are total weirdos. I first discovered them on the Og Label off the compilation ” It Came From Canada vol. 2. With the classic song „Three men one Coffin” . It’s an entirely different flavour of skronk compared to Klazo , but one that I do enjoy . It’s like mutant rockabilly music that’s been pulled out of the bottom of a river in a rusty Edsel. 

CS.P. – Favorite record labels?

J.A. – First and foremost I wanna shout out to Big Neck and No Front Teeth Records for releasing our album ‘Demik Dementia. Thanks for releasing us! I recently got a box Of Goodbye Boozy records in the mail courtesy of a label trade..hmm I got some Feel It Records, Goner and Total Punk Records for Christmas. Slovenly is cool too!

CS.P. – Favorite poison?

J.A. – Lysergic Acid Diethylamide

Időközben persze többször találkoztunk személyesen, de ilyenkor inkább az italozáson volt a hangsúly, nem mindenféle kérdéseket kitalálni és azokra válaszolni. I’ve known Paula for 10 years now.
We first met when she performed in Budapest with her band J.C. Satàn at the 45th RNR666 event (2010 october). Ever since then I’ve been following the music she makes, wherever she roams in the world or what she is currently drawing. This might initially seem like a case of voyeurism but I’d rather consider this as a genuine interest in a fellow soul. This time we sat down with she to talk about the SPERM OF WOMAN – her upcoming adults-only comic, sexuality, repressed desires and we might inadvertently reinforce that RNR666 magazine is not suitable for children or prudes.

> – If i know well, you lived in Seattle at early ’90s when the „big grunge exposion” happend. How do you remember those times?

> I was just a young teenager but i remember getting to see some cool bands before they were famouse in really small places…smashing pumpkins…green day…a lot of bands toured through seattle so it was good.  after grunge got popular i kind of stopped listening to it and dug more into the underground music scene.

> – How old were you when you left the parental house?
>
> I was 15. I stole a car and drove to california to start a new life.

> – How was teen Boby? Punk, metal head?  I guess you did’t start with the country for the first time.

> punk and metal…but io always had the country love.  for example my first concert was Johnny Cash with my mom when i was 11 years old.  And i really loved GG Allins country record.

> yes my first country experience was seeing Johnny cas and June carter live in 1988

> –  What are your insights, the people who are listening exclusively to radio / commercial country music, but somehow they get to your music. They love it or not really?

> i find we get fans from all genres.  at our shows you will see cowboy hats and Slayer shirts.

> – You were Hank III’s guitar technician (or what?). Which year it was? Could you tell us some (or one) good memories from those times?

> thats how i got my start was being the roadie for Hank 3.  He really taught me alot about the road and the music buisness and was a huge inspiration.

> – You ve got a big NEUROSIS tattoo! You re a fan. Did you ever play with them on one bill?
>
> i love Neurosis.  I have toured with Scott Kelly the lead singer of neurosis in Europe and in america with his solo project.  He is a brother now.
>
> – Somewhere I read that in your young age you were thinking of being a filmmaker.What is your favorite movies from the past and what is your favorite from the last few years? Have you seen „Bone Tomahawk” with Kurt Russell?
>
>Yes a lot of my songs are actually movie ideas that i had.  But its very hard to get a movie made so i ended up just writing them in song form to keep it easy.  so a lot of my songs are actually small movie pitches.  I recently wrote a script for MACK the truck driver and i am shopping it around hollywood.  My favorite movies fromt the past are probably devils rejects…and recently i like sicario.

> – At last, what is your currently line up on this tour?

Helló Susu! Van egy ilyen sorozatunk a RNR666-on, hogy ‘Hey Butt! What The Fuck?’ Lényege, hogy megkérdezzük attól, aki éppen eszünkbe jut, hogy Mi a faszom van?

Épp most olvastam, hogy kiadjátok a Másfél cucccait újra. Jó ötlet. A első két kazettát szerettem annak idején meg a Viperagarzon vót meg egy haveromnak cd-n. Meg azt is olvastam, hogy vinylen is ki szeretnétek adni egy válogatás Lp-t. Kábé mikor lenne ez? A többi újrakiadás az meg ilyen digitálgenyó lenne?

DJ SUEFO – Ja a többi az digitálgenyó, és akkor lesz vinyl válogatás, ha már minden újra lesz maszterelve. A legjobban sikerültek kerülnek majd rá.

– Apropó vótál te betrinyózva Másfélen?

– Mindenen voltam betrinyózva nem csak Másfélen 😉

– Mikor jössz mán el egy RNR666 Buliba végre? Vótál te egyáltalán? Végül is a kezdő lökés tőled vót még 12 éve mikor az MK2 (Mezőkövesd 2 ) rádióval összehoztál minket. Azóta van RNR666.

– Amúgy RNR-en kétszer tuti játszottam, de lehet, hogy háromszor. Közönségként voltam 5-6 alkalommal.

– Járod még a budapesti éjszakát mint Dj amúgy? Sok a paraszt?

– DJ-zés megy, be vagyok táblázva eléggé. Igazából most még 3 másik embernek is én adok melókat. És ja, sok a paraszt, egyre több. Külföldről se a jó arcok jönnek már, csak a white trash.

– Van pár kazettád, ami nálam maradt (hallgatva vannak) a kedvencem: A oldal Alboth! – Amour 1991 / B oldal Monster Magnet – Spine of God 1991. Micsoda párosítás!!!!!

– Örülök, hogy az Alboth jó kezekben van! A Neurotic műsoros nincs ott? Azt nem találom, már nem emlékszem kinek adtam kölcsön.

– Nincs nálam a Neurotic. Kőcsön se kértem vóna én azt.
