terry

A new Aussie quartet with members of such great garage bands as UV Race, Total Control, Dick Diver, Constant Mongrel, School Of Radiant Living, Eastlink, Russell Street Bombings, Lower Plenty, The Backstabbers – maybe you know some – and Xanthe Waite sings one of Mick Harvey’s Gainbsbourg album.

TERRY has been formed after a Total Control US tour in Mexico City in 2015 when two couples have decided to start a simple and charming pop band that could tour and vacation together. But more telling about that „simple and charming pop” that The Rebel (ex-Country Teasers) is chosen to play with them on their first show in London. And good like Parquet Courts is.

Masters of Puppet

Singer Andy Savage said

As I see it, humanity is something that’s partly performed and party instinctual. Like puppets, we sometimes are controlled by parts of ourselves that we never really become acquainted with, but are always there. This song is me confronting that shadow

Being a female musician: it’s really fun, but sometimes lonely

Keel Her / Claire Cottrill split cassette

keelher_cottrill

Keel Her aka Rose Jayne Keeler-Schäffeler is a London based alien-obsessed hyperactive girl from Brighton. Makes high standard lo-fi sometimes noisy bedroom pop. And managed by Satan. In 2012 the godfather of lo-fi, and World Champion of DIY home recordings, R. Steevie Moore invited her to play together at his studio in Memphis. And she is in The Bin Bags where playing violin, keys and vocals. Just released their first EP on Permanent Slump Records. (The third song in this playlist is from them.) She said in an interview: Being a female musician: it’s really fun, but sometimes lonely. I’m an outsider, but I always have been, regardless.

Claire Cottrill is a very young girl from Boston (Massachusetts, US). With her guitar she makes music under the influence of sixties soul and r’n’b and Korn.

“I guess there’s quite a dark side to me. It always comes out when I’m writing songs. I love Sylvia Plath, and I love listening to songs that have that haunting darkness that really pulls you in, so it’s probably something that I want to create in my songs.” She plays every instrument on her recordings, from bass to piano, from guitar to sitar. Strange bitter-sweet haunted folky pop songs or “grungy abstract folk with a playful darkness” by Marika Hackman

Seductive brooding jazz with an electronic twist. Baritone sax, double bass, drums, samplers and a whole lot of stomp boxes and effects.  Cozy melancholic cocoon in the midst of a looming, cold, unwelcoming metropolis of Moscow. Eight stories told by different people in different places. For a rainy evening and a bottle of vodka.

Take Care! This Grass Is Wild

“It’s noisy, with keyboards, you wouldn’t like it”

Wild Grass by Gentle Friendly

from the album ” K A U A ‘  I   O’O  A ‘A” on Fat Cat (UK)

Gentle Friendly started when David took some scrapped drums and guitars out of a skip in East-London. Cleaned the instruments and invited Daniel to “come and mess with the stuff” while he played his broken Casio MT-40. Eventually the guitars stayed out of use.

Like a Renaissance Girl

29 years old British poet, playwright and rapper Kate Tempest‘s second Speedy Wunderground single is a duet with Londoner fellow Loyle Carner. In the Guts his acid jazzy sound blends with Kate’s hard, electronic beats. This is a special release because the label’s strict order of recordings: recording in the dark with smoke and lazers, need to use Swarmatron (a hand-built analogue synthesiser), recording time is one day, finish before midnight, no lunch break, mixing on the next day.

I can’t refrain to doing list Tempest’s main influences: Virginia Woolf, MF Doom, Samuel Beckett, John Coltrane, James Joyce, Roots Manuva, William Blake, Wu-Tang Clan, Milan Kundera, GZA, Knut Hamson, Mos Def, Yeats, Nina Simone, Carson McCullers, The Knife, Kafka, Scroobius Pip, and Confucius… Her first solo album „Everybody Down” was made together with the producer Dan Carey (Franz Ferdinand, Bat For Lashes, TOY, Django Django, Emiliana Torrini, The Kills, Kylie Minogue, Tame Impala, founder of Speedy Wunderground). It was released this year on Big Dada Records. „Alternative hip-hop” trio Sound of Rum was her previous project. It had a jazzy taste thanks to the drums and guitar.

On Clapton Pound at dawn

The pond was calm
the sky was new
your voice was soft your lies were true.
You were me and I was you
and I was going blind with you.

You told me I reminded you
of Venus when I smiled at you,
or angels that go flying through
the paintings in the quietest rooms
of galleries. Renaissance girls,
all soft curves and floating curls.
We sat there and the light shone through
the leaves and we admired the view.

I loved you.
I had died for you
that night,
I’d closed my eyes
and through the gaps
I’d sought your silhouette.
I’d given up my mind for you.
We did what all our kind would do.

You sat beside me, finding new
ways to look away.
You kissed me. It was lighter fuel.
It burnt the night away.
And when I took my eyes off you
I saw that it was day.

Bang Bang

Speedy Wunderground is a very special little label in London. It was formed in early 2013 by the producer Dan Carey. He worked together with Franz Ferdinand, Bat For Lashes, TOY, Django Django, Emiliana Torrini, The Kills, Kylie Minogue, Tame Impala among others.
The Speedy Wunderground works under strict rules: Dan will produce all releases. All records will be recorded at Dan’s studio. Recording of all records will be done in one day and finish before midnight. Mixing will be done the day following the recording, also in one day only. There will be no lunch break during these days. The core of each song will be a live take recorded in the dark with smoke and lazers and somewhere on each record the Swarmatron (a hand-built analogue synthesiser) will make an appearance. The recordings will appear in limited runs of 250 7”s.

bangbang

Natalie Bang Bang is a Riot Grrrl. She said it. And made mention of Serge Gainsbourg, David Bowie, Madonna, A$AP Rocky and David Byrne as her top musicians. And picked Loser by Beck as her national anthem. But nevertheless she is just a teen spice girl in soft Madonna style. Maybe this post punk disco track is her first really good song

Dadaist Savage Garden of London

Two London based bands
an all female post punk noise rock band with French singer and Turkish bassist:
Savages (Matador Records) &
an all Japanese psychedelic rock band, similar to another Japanese band, Boris:
Bo Ningen
are in a special collaboration

bonsavages

London 2012. Savages are recording the debut album. In the middle of an intense three weeks, they set out one evening to see the band Bo Ningen. A few days later producer Johnny Hostile begins to muse over the possibility of two bands playing in the same space at the same time.  Concurrently Gemma Thopson of Savages is reading about the performances at the Cabaret Voltaire.

“Zurich in 1916 and Hugo Ball is instrumental in creating the Cabaret Voltaire – a club which will become central to the performances of the Dada movement, during which the artists would experiment with forms of sound poetry and simultaneous poetry. A movement created through the horror of World War One, it attempts to understand how society has reached such an illogical decision. Through simultaneous poetry begins the attempt to delve into chaos and maelstrom, to find the voice of the individual struggling to be heard. We decide to approach Bo Ningen with the idea of collaborating on a Sonic Simultaneous Poem.”

The idea begins to take shape in early 2013, they prepare for both bands to rehearse together in a studio with a loose composition based around five chapters. As the musicians of both bands consider how to apply themselves with their instruments to each chapter – revolving, colliding and intertwining with words sang in Japanese, French and English. They also envisage the physical space in which to perform.

„We imagine a stage in a large u-shape to contain as much of the audience as possible in the centre. The two drummers next to each other at the ‘bottom’ of the u, then leading around symmetrically (facing each other): guitarists, bassists and singers at the tips of the u-shape. Bo Ningen have a guitar extra, so we hang one from the ceiling to hit as you would a gong. Eventually we fix a date and a space for what we believe is a one-off performance that we name „Words To The Blind.” It was performed at The Red Gallery, London on May 29th 2013. The 37-minutes long track will be released on November 17th by Stolen Recordings (UK) and Pop Noire Records (France).

Snippets from the performance

They will do it again together this on 19 November at the Oval Space, London.
