Todd Tamanend Clark started out listening to his mother’s Yma Sumac records as a child in the 1950s. Some of his favorites were Bo Diddley and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Then he heavily influenced by the 60’s psychedelic rock bands like Jimi Hendrix Experience, Doors, Electric Prunes and particularly the United States of America, in consequence of their synthesizers. He has fallen in love with these instruments. Then there were some bands from the end of the 60s sure, but rather he worked with occasionally collaborators. For example Cheetah Chrome (Rocket from The Tombs – David Thomas’ pre-Pere Ubu band, Dead Boys) or W. S. Burroughs. The Aardvark Thru Zymurgy LP was recorded and released in 1977 under the name of New Gods:

The influences of The Future Primitives come from early rock’n’roll, 60s garage and first era psychedelic groups.  We wrote about them some months ago that they are „Voodoo Rhythm compatible band from South Africa”

After 2 Years Psychiatric Treatment

here is the full new album of the Berlin resident notorious Canadian garage rocker King Khan and his big band The Shrines. But first some words about his previous things.

kingkhan3

His infamous garage rock band was The Spaceshits between 1995-99. It was well known for their violent stage shows. Their sets lasted no longer than 10 to 15 minutes because the band or members of the audience would create disturbances, including fireworks or food fights. The band’s shows would lead them to be effectively blacklisted from many venues in Montreal. During the European tour King Khan has decided to remain in Berlin, hereby the Spaceshits disbanded. In same year he has formed his garage rock psychedelic soul outfit The King Khan & The Shrines. The band’s percussionist, Ron Streeter formerly played for Ike and Tina Turner, Bo Diddley, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Al Jarreau. The organist is Fredovitch, the French multi-instrumentalist.

“Here’s 3 ugly lookin blokes, tourin’ the world, playin at all these wonderful cities, dining at all these wonderful restaurants, meeting all these famous people. In the back of ya head I’m thinking to myself ‘Im a fuckin’ farmer!” – one of the members of Cosmic Psychos said.* The old Aussie punk rock band formed in 1982, and over some line-up change and an untimely death by heart attack they still rock on. Their music is garage punk hard rock’n’roll like Motörhead, Stooges or Ramones. Strange though it may appear they had a significant influence on the Seattle Sound in the 90s through their some fans: Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Buzz Osbourne (The Melvins) or Donita Sparks (L7). Now the Goner and the Aussie Aargth Records re-release their first three albums.1st track from 1987, 2nd & 3rd from 1989.

*I Love My Tractor – is the title of their latest and live album (2013)

speedywThe Speedy Wunderground is a very interesting label and studio in London. In accordance with the founder’s order:

All records of the label will be recorded at their own studio. The musicians, the producer and engineer are together in one room, with no control room. The recordings of the label’s all releases will be done in one day and finishing before midnight. The core of each song will be a live take recorded in the dark with smoke and lazers and somewhere on each record the Swarmatron will make an appearance. Mixing will be done the next day, also in one day only. Furthermore there will be no lunch break during the recording and mixing. The recordings will appear in limited runs of 250 7”s as soon as humanly possible. The founder, Dan Carey will produce all releases.

He has previously produced Franz Ferdinand, Bat For Lashes, TOY, Willy Mason, Django Django, Emiliana Torrini, The Kills, Chairlift and Steve Mason (aka: King Biscuit Time and Black Affair). Now here is the founder’s own project under the name of Scotti Brains. Taking their name from a shared love of San Franciscan psych band Bunny Brains and his cat. Psychedelic noisy indie guitar music:

LOT OF HAIR, BURRITOS, AND BAD JOKES

An interview with

Mr. Elevator & The Brain Hotel

a really great 60s style psychedelic rock band from California

mre

Hey guys! You’re Mr. Elevator and The Brain Hotel! You’re doin’ fuckin’ good things! What’s the style?

Hey, thanks man! The style? I guess if you combined a lot of hair, burritos, and bad jokes all at once in a weird magical spell it’d come out being somewhat of something like us….

You make many kinds of music like garage-psych-glam-pop-punk-rock in other bands as Feeding People, Cosmonauts*, Peach Kelli Pop, etc. How came the idea of the new style and band?

Mr. Elevator, like Moses, was a calling to us from a burning bush. A female’s burning bush.

Your music reminds me of The Doors and the Silver Apples (are an American pioneer psychedelic synth-drums duo. The group was active between 1967 and 1969. Reformed in 1996.  – editor’s note), but sometimes the Madness come to my mind too. What is your opinion?

All great bands man. There are very few bands that really gave light to what an organ or just piano related instruments can do and sound like. Ray did a very fine job though.. RIP (e.n: Ray Manzarek was the organ player of The Doors. He passed away on May 20.)

Your name is very strange LSD-flavored. Were there some other alternatives?

We started actually as an all water zodiac signed jam band called Tropical Fish. Played a handful of shows with that name and a very obscure set of songs hahah but the name is actually a reference to a Donovan song. The ultimate musical mystic!

Your brilliant 1st LP is coming soon or…?

Soon! We’re re-recording what we just worked on the past few months because it just didn’t come out how we envisioned it. We have so many songs and not one album yet.. so expect a little something soon

Please offer some favorite local bands!

Froth! Mystic Braves! (Formerely known as Blackfoot Braves.) Jeffertiti’s Nile! Cool Ghouls! too many man good local music everywhere these days

And now please tell me a bizarre or a funny or a weekday story that happened in your circles nowadays!

Running Lolipop Records in Echo Park, we get a lot of strange encounters with homeless/batshit crazy folks. All ranging around supreme racial pride, death threats, and lactose intolerant homeless

What is your message to the readers?

You’re right where you ought to be why can’t you ever see everything you want is right here.

The Destruction Unit started as a synth-punk solo project by Ryan Rousseau (Reatards, Black Sunday, Digital Leather etc.) in Memphis in 2000. Then Jay Reatard (Reatards, Lost Sounds, etc.) and Alicja Trout (Lost Sounds, Black Sunday, River City Tanlines etc.) joined to him. The first 2 DU album made by them. The band has been through many members and sounds. At the moment they play psychedelic space hard rock, but „we all come from punk backgrounds and we’ve always been a punk band.”

So Am I Too?

whitehills

The White Hills has started in the early 2000s. Dave W. was dissatisfied for previous bands and decided to start his own one. He played every instrument on the early recordings, but has found a fix mate, the bassist Ego Sensation soon. Dave W. was discontented with the audience in the US too. “Fuck the States! I’m not gonna bust my ass to drive hundreds and hundreds of miles to play to nobody.” He has got his main musical influences from England and Germany: Hawkwind, Pink Faires, PIL and NEU!, Amon Duul II, so they went to Europe to search audience for their heavy psychedelic rock. And there they have meet with success. After a self-released CDr (2003) the first White Hills album on label released in 2005 by Julian Cope’s Fuck Off & Di Records in England. Since then they have been releasing their works continuously by various labels. And they are a really active band. The brand-new dose: So You’re… So You’ll Be. I don’t want to write about it too many. The point: heavy psychedelic space rock. Sometimes emerge a little Twin Peaks feeling there, but perhaps only for me. Maybe it is the first case that there isn’t 10+ minutes track on their record, so it is a receptible album for those who better like the hard rock and roll than the heavy psychedelia. Listen!
