The starter of publication of sci-fi literature in Hungary, writer and poet Peter Kuczka has written in one of his poem: „We’re just sex organs.” He was a convinced communist until a countryside tour in 1953. During this he so deeply disappointed in the ideology’s practice and practitioners, that became a forbidden writer for many years. „Just stupid assholes everywhere around me” – he could think. And I think the same, if I read the Hungarian press, or see the electoral campaign’s posters.

The founder of notorious British alternative punk band Country Teasers (which was somewhere between The Fall and Fat White Family), Ben Waller says about the beginning of his musical carrier: “I envied the guys in the school band. They didn’t invite me to join, so I formed my own band. I wanted to play the Cure’s guitar melodies, so that’s how I learnt, playing along. I learnt by ear. I had learnt piano to Grade 3, which I failed; I learnt sax for a year or two at school too. Fucking hated it. Kyle Gibson: As a kid I remember seeing my sister’s boyfriend’s Damned Damned Damned record and being intrigued by the wild looking people on the cover. Also my sister had an X Ray Spex shirt and came home from college with a computer with a bunch of songs by The Stooges, Buzzcocks, and Bikini Kill on her computer. That was when I felt a cool personal connection to bands/music. So really a computer and t shirts made me want to play music.

At the time, back in the early seventies the Vietnam war was still raging, Susan Dietrich and her husband Joel and their tiny daughter were political exiles, living like refugees in the States. Joel would be imprisoned for having resisted the draft. For nine years they had subsisted on spare change and meager sales of their artwork on the streets. Finding a dilapidated, old accordion in a junk store was the major cause in turning her life around.  And “the Space Lady began her odyssey on the streets of San Francisco in the late 70s, playing an accordion and dressed flamboyantly, transmitting messages of peace and harmony. Following the theft of her accordion, she invested in a then-new Casio keyboard…” and plays minimal prog lo-fi space pop.

Joanna Gruesome is among the best indie rock band. The Welsh group combines garage punk with indie pop in a very unique style. There will be released two split records soon.
