The Emperor returns – – – new Matthias von Stumberger album

‘Aahhh, pandemonium at last. Perfect time for a new online album. (…) It’s so filthy though, you might catch a disease or four just by listening…’

After a hiatus of 8 years, Matthias von Stumberger created something infectious and dirty again in his living room. Self-written (well, except for the Kraftwerk cover, obviously), self-immolated, self-recorded, self-produced and self-released, easily the best way to approach garage punk.

As if no time had passed since 2012, the new songs are still carefully packed with anger, dark surf guitar riffs from all over the gypsy scale and the complete freedom to do whatever you want with your own music, no matter how dirty your hands get throughout the process.

„I’m proud to say I’m still a sponge.” Shilpa Ray about her influences

In her music you can find blues punk rock and roll soul gospel and beside conventional instruments a harmonium and sometime a pedal steel guitar:

Some people say her music is a mix of Blondie, Cramps and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Her singing style is often compared to Patti Smith and Nick Cave. Some years before she toured with Cave as supporting act and backup singer, even he was who released her first EP after her band Happy Hookers disbanded. Even more she recorded her version of Kurt Weil/Bertolt Brecht song Pirate Jenny with Nick Cave and Warren Ellis for a compilation album.

As a child of an Indian immigrant family she learnt to play the piano and harmonium but was banned from western type music but later she became a goth girl. Her first band was the bass-drums-harmonium trio Beat The Devil where she wrote all of music and lyrics already. Her music is so entertainingly eclectic that I felt the need ask about her influences. She says:

I’m proud to say I’m still a sponge in the sense that I can absorb a lot. At the same time with a question like this I never know where to start. I obviously love music my tastes have a fairly wide range. I’d say my biggest influences are the Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, Arthur Lee

Classic Punk, Hip Hop especially old school Hip Hop, Industrial/Noise, Soul, and Old Bollywood music from the 60s and 70s. Lately I’ve been really into Broadcast and Ministry. Ha! Who would ever put those two together? I don’t know, it’s just where I’m at:

I like other forms of art as well. I used to be a dancer so that comes in to play a lot. If I can’t move to my own music then what ‘s the point? I do like to read and do it often but in short form. Something I can get through in one sitting like poetry, essays, short stories rather than a novel. I’ve got a short attention span. I love streaming TV shows. I’m all about it, especially if the writing is witty. I recently watched Fleabag and Killing Eve. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a damn good writer.

Cooking is another big one for me. I love to cook and I love to eat. Most studio engineers I know are big into cooking. It makes sense to me cause making a record and making a well balanced meal is kind of the same thing. Anytime I’m at a mixing session I often wonder if the track has been over spiced. I love going to museums and looking at art. I like the theatre a lot to. This is all starting to sound like a profile on some Tinder app. Are you gonna swipe left or swipe right?

4 új magyar punk lemez az életedért

Tiszta dolog, hogy a punknak jót tesz a szar környezet, ennek megfelelően a magyar punk jobb mint évtizedek óta bármikor! Íme négy, februárban megjelent demó(?), lemez(?), felvétel(?) bizonyítéknak arra, hogy ÍGY VAN!

Kezdjük mondjuk a Tunga Penetráns– al. Na, erről semmit nem tudok, azon kívül ami ott van a bandcamp oldalukon. Talán egyszemélyes produkció lehet, a nagyonfasza borítót egy Gréti nevezetű lány festette, akinek a nevével és grafikájával a Penészvirág punkfanzine ötödik számában már találkoztam. Ja, meg még azt, hogy keverést Fefi intézte aki pl. a Berosszulás-ban, a Piss Crystals-ban meg egy csomó mindenben játszik.

A zene full noise punk, jó durva és zajos, de mondjuk fejhallgatóval hallgatva sok úgymond finomságot fel lehet fedezni benne.Punk, Hard Core ez meg minden, tudom én. De nekem sokszor olyan érzésem van mint mikor a nagyon korai Lightning Bolt cuccait hallgattam, visz az egész mint az állat. A szövegek kurvajók!

Szintén február végi előzetes a budapesti Észleléstől egyenlőre két szám a bandcamp-en meg egy klip. Elvileg kijön majd a teljes anyag 7incsesen nemsoká. Az első demójuk is tetszett már, de nem hallgattam túl sokat (a szövegek kurvára tetszettek). A youtube-ra feltöltött koncerteket nézegetve, viszont feltűnő volt, hogy változik valami, lassulnak befele, meg az egész ilyen összeszedett, vagymi. Tetszett ez az irány nagyon. Ez a két szám már totál ez a vonal, brainbombsos talán….. A Kész elmebaj nekem totál a miskolci Kérdőjel (vagy simán „?”) szövegben is zenében is.

A Crüel Night meg Csimpi új zenekara, Csimpi az a srác aki az Urban Threat fesztivált szervezte tavaly és szervezi idén is. És, ha jól tudom ahhoz a fasza válogatáshoz is köze van, amin mai magyar punkbandák játszanak régi ’80-as magyar punkbandáktól egy-egy számot.

Na de a demó. Metal Punk vagy Punk Metal kinek, hogy tetszik. Kibaszott nyers és durva az egész primkó, ahogy kell, ahogy a stílus megkívánja! És az ének mint korona az egész tetején…. nehéz elhinni, hogy ezt egy nő adja ki magából. Kemény lehet egy családi veszekedés otthon!

( érdekes lehet, hogy a Crüel Night.nak volt egy olyan előzménye, hogy Bad Icons ahol Czira gitározott a Sex Riders- ből.)

És végül a Korgoth, a kibaszott Korgoth! Csak megjelent valami hanganyag tőlük is végre. Egy koncertfelvétel 2018 novemberéből. Volt szerencsém ott lenni ezen a bulin és mitmongyakmagának? nem sok mindenre emlékszem. Viszont egy régebbi, dürerpincés bulijuk kurvára bevésődött! Akkor szétbasztak, letaroltak mindenkit aki a teremben volt, úgy, hogy mindenki mosolygott, ugrált mint a hülyegyerek és ölelgette a másikat. Komolyanmondom egyik legszebb koncertélményem evör! A két figurát Palit és Krisztiánt alapból is nagyon csípem, imádom a zenekar nevét: Korgoth. Kimondani is jó! Úgyhogy ez van.

Na de mégis valamit. Dob und basszus a felállás instrumentálba nyomják. Ha megkérdezed őket, hogy mit játszanak, azt fogják válaszolni METAL!

Ember tervez, James Leg végez

FEBRUÁR 12-én a Kino Session szervezésében PÉCSett
játszik a JAMES LEG soul-blues-punk duó.
Más magyarországi koncert nem lesz, csak ez.

A JAMES LEG elektromos orgona + dob kettős aztán jött létre, hogy Reverend James Leg – született John Wesley Myers – előző zenekara, a Black Diamond Heavies feloszlott. Az szintén billentyű + dob felállású banda volt, de mivel az orgona nem volt betorzítva, így hagyományos hangzásúnak mondható, ellentétben a James Leggel, ahol sokszor hihetjük azt, hogy gitár vagy basszus szól éppen, pedig nem. Az énekhang miatt sokaknak juthat eszébe Tom Waits, viszont vele ellentétben James Leg legtöbbször egyszerűen rock’n’rollként definiálja muzsikájuk:

John Wesley Myers egy texasi kisvárosban született egy baptista prédikátor fiaként, aki nagy gondot fordított gyermeke harmonikus lelki fejlődésének zavartalanságára. Zenei nevelést is szigorúan vallásos alapon kapott. Egy napon apja, mikor rájött, hogy 14 éves fia szülei távollétében a családi lemezgyűjteményben meglapuló három darab világi zenét hallgatja (például ezt és ezt), tüzet rakott a kert végében, és a lángok közé hajította mindhármat.

Ezzel szinte egy időben érkezett a városba egy keresztény vándortársulat, mely műsorában a rockzene és a sátánizmus kapcsolatát firtatta. Apai utasításra Johnnak is mennie kellett. Az előadáson Ozzy, AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Prince, Van Halen és Rolling Stones számokkal rémítették a közönséget. A Queen “Another One Bites The Dust” című számát visszafelé is meghallgatták, mivel akkor a refrént így is lehet érteni: „marijuana, marijuana, decide to smoke marijuana”. A felvilágosító előadás után John természetesen rákapott a fűre és a rockzenére, és 17 évesen elköltözött otthonról.

Talán még érdekes lehet, hogy tagja volt a ritka állat blues punkot játszó Immortal Lee County Killersnek is a zenekar utolsó periódusában. Ha jól tudom ezen a nagylemezükön játszott.

És külön Hammer Zsaninak mondanám, hogy közreműködött ez a jóember Scott H. Biram 2009-es nagylemezén!
