Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011) was an Afro-American poet and musician. He made his music in jazz, funk and soul, and exerted huge influence on hip-hop with his spoken words. His last album „I’m New Here” was recorded in 2008. During the session he recorded stripped-down new versions of some of his songs. Accompanying himself on piano and with no overdubs. On his first album (1970, produced by Bob Thile) he named as influences Richie Havens (singer/songwriter, the opening act in Woodstock), John Coltrane (one of the greatest jazz saxists), Otis Redding (soul and blues singer/songwriter), Jose Feliciano (Puerto Rican guitar virtuoso), Billie Holiday, Nina Simone (jazz singers) from musicians. From activists: Langston Hughes (poet, writer, human rights activist), Malcolm X (while was imprisonment owing to lacreny concverted to Islam, became black superiority activist, then would be human rights activist) and Huey Newton (was a controversial person, co-founded the Afro-American left-wing organization, Black Panther Party, he killed a 17 years old girl becuse he very didn’t like if somebody called him by his nickname „baby”, the eyewitness changed her testimony after some Black Panther members tried to kill her, a man who known too many things about this case would be buried alive in the desert.  He was shot to death by a drug dealer Black Guerrilla Family member shortly after Newton left a crack house. Black Guerrilla Family is a gang which was founded at San Quentin State Prison and based on Marxist and Maoist ideology.)

Lilacs & Champagne is an alternative project of Emil Amos (drums) and Alex Hall (guitar) from Grails which plays instrumental cinematic music. They have started a fantasy record series Midnight Features. Inspired by the Marvel comics series What if? These were alternative stories of well-known super heroes of Marvel. In musical equivalents of these the band places himself into various musical eras. The first chapter, the Shower Scene takes place in the 70s, and was inspired by the background music of TV shows, crimes, dramas, romantics and more.

„We were playing this one club in Rome. It was a small place, it was really packed, and we’re doing Penetrate. As I go into the song I realize that the audience is singing along with me. Then I noticed they were doing that on a lot of songs. I had met a bunch of these people before the show, and they didn’t speak any English.” – said Dennis Most in an interview. It’s miraculous because his band was almost totally unknown until the early 2000s.

Dennis Most & The Instigators were formed as a punk band in 1979. Before this there were two bands of Mr. Most: „Punk” was founded in 1972, Dennis Most & AudioLove in 1976. Punk was “trippy blues/garage-rock combo” influenced by Standells, Troggs and sames. AudioLove was „garagey, metally proto-punk” influenced by Stooges, MC5 and early British heavy metal bands.

Dennis Most & The Instigators had only a self-released single in that time. Most released solo recordings in 1982 (7″) and 1985 (LP), among his songs there was a Cole Porter interpretation too! (Anyway Porter was a punk by his extravagant, scandalous lifestyle. Two of his songs is sung by Iggy Pop. One with Debbie Harry, Two on his cover album „Apres”.)
The Instigators were resurrected in the early 2000s. Since then their early materials were released beside new recordings on various indie labels in Finland, Italy, Germany and US. Now here is the brand new material, „Instigate Me” with 7 songs, among these is an interpretation of Cheap Trick’s He’s A Whore. Good old-style punk music like Ramones or Misfits with more metallic edge and some gothic influence. Strange that the music reminds me of the Finnish Psychoplasma, but I almost sure that they don’t know about it. „Instigate Me” is released on CD-r by Kotlovan Records in Russia!

The band’s bassist is Keith Grave of Atomic Buddha.
