Music Below The Line

ARNDALES is a sardonic post-punk quartet,
a hidden gem at an English countryside warehouse.
Their long-awaited debut album „SHOPS” coming soon.

Some thoughts about them in special LUTON HAIKU style.
There are rules and laws which people attribute to haiku writing
which aren’t the concern of Luton haiku writers.

Luton, the lively English town somewhere in the Polish-Pakistani borderland
to where I arrived 2 and half years before as a mentally emigrant from Hungary.
Of course it was raining that day.

And then totally suddenly The Fall played in Luton
at a fest where the other day Lee Scratch Perry was the big name
but that day I went to London to see Guitar Wolf.

And then my eyes got stuck in a name in the festival book: ARNDALES.
Got its name after Arndale Centre which is known as The Mall in Luton nowadays.
And one time it was the biggest covered shopping centre in Europe.

I googled them. And it turned up that In The Red Records release them.
And it releases just fine stuff, like Bassholes, Black Lips, Chain & The Gang,
Jay Reatard, Kid Congo, Oblivians, Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, Andre Williams

And I read their former bands are Country Teasers, Thrilled Skinny,
Badgewearer, Pregnant Neck, Collapsed Lung, Zuno Men,
and they played songs like this

rigth before The Fall at the same place.
And there I observed the guitar player’s hamburger patterned socks.
I thought those were witty symbol of the consumer idiotism.

On their new album they have taken inspiration from the world of retail jargon.
E.g. the opening track „Prestige Pricing” is named after the practice of inflating
the price of a product to indicate it’s prestigious status.

The album „SHOPS” is coming soon on IN THE RED RECORDINGS.
And there is nothing shiny. Just old fashioned music like the old Fall
with a Negativland song which is replaced to mid Bedfordshire.

1. The enigmatically beautiful Katalin Kirby has made the album AN EMPTY BLISS BEYOND OLD BUDAPEST from tunes of a lost world as THE CARTAKER. WORLD PREMIERE

2. Amazing Swiss post-punk band PETER KERNEL‘s new album THE SIZE OF THE NIGHT by ON THE CAMPER RECORDS (CH)

—–

3. Influential three women fronted NY city post-punk band BUSH TETRAS was founded in 1979 by guitarist Pat Place after leaving the no-wave group James Chance and The Contortions. They brought funky dance songs and vocal rhythms to the freaky outsider punk scene. They broke up in 1983, reunited for a short time in the mid-90s and second time in 2005. Since they have released two albums and the third TAKE THE FALL is coming in April on WHARF CAT RECORDS (US)

4. GENTLE LEADER XIV pulls on synth-heavy, chorus-filled ’80s heartstrings without diving deep into nostalgia, evoking emotional memory over a gray template of realism. It’s pop without future, love without romance, survival with an undercurrent of persistent loss. debut album CHANNELS on MONIKER RECORDS (US)

5. SCOTTIBRAINS are the enigmatic elusive four-piece who formed through a love of late night, early morning jams at band founder, producer and Speedy Wunderground head Dan Carey’s studios in London. Theirs is hard-hitting, unsympathetic rock resembling punk’s early days, but with an increased musicality that makes it all their own. Taking their name from a shared love of San Franciscan psych outfit Bunny Brains and Dan’s cat Scotti.

Limited 7″ single on SPEEDY WUNDERGROUND – mixed by the one and only ORLA CAREY (aged 13)!

7. “I got a right to say FUCK YOU!!!” is how the new album from guitarist Marc Ribot’s trio CERAMIC DOG starts off, with Ribot howling in anger at corruption, tyranny, life in general, and nothing in particular. The album YRU Still Here? on NORTHERN SPY RECORDS (US) just in time to remind us that now is a moment when anger is necessary and unavoidable. Musically it continues the lineage of his earlier experimental no-wave/punk/noise groups Rootless Cosmopolitans and Shrek. Beside Ribot, you can find Shahzad Ismaily (Secret Chiefs 3, Will Oldham, Ben Frost) on bass/electronics and drummer Ches Smith (Xiu Xiu, Secret Chiefs 3, Trevor Dunn’s Trio Convulsant).

He says “I find it hard to believe that I work as hard as other people because I do spend a lot of my free time just lounging around watching TV and going to the pub and stuff like that. I put out a lot of album, but to me, that just seems like a natural part of playing music – if you love it, you’re going to leave this big trail of albums behind you.” He pauses. “I don’t know, though – maybe everyone else just has better quality control than I do.”

19. The story of INSECURE MEN has started in Paris when the Fat White Family’s main songwriter Saul Adamczewski was asked to leave the band temporarily after refusing to vacate the Paris venue the band was playing because he’d arranged to meet a heroin dealer there later on.

He said about: “I fell into a downward spiral, living on a friend’s floor just smoking crack and heroin and doing nothing else. After four months I snapped out of it and realized I needed to get clean. When I came out of rehab I had nothing left other than these songs – I was like a ship without a sail – so it started to look like Insecure Men was something I should definitely pursue as my main project.”

He teamed up with his school friend Ben Romans-Hopcraft (from the band Childhood) and recorded those songs which blend together exotica, easy listening, lounge and timeless pop music. Debut album on FAT POSSUM RECORDS (US)

Message From Rev. Beat-Man

Subject:

Band: Reverend Beat-Man and the New Wave
Album Title: Blues Trash
Label: Voodoo Rhythm Records

DEAR PEOPLE from the Living Underground,

It’s an album I always wanted to make and it almost took me 10 years after the last release.. I’m sorry.. Way too long.. but I think it’s a good album and I love it.. and I hope you too.. It’s a bit different to the others and to the music today… but who cares 😉
I selected the NEW WAVE from musicians I love the most as the moment:

NICOLE IZOBEL GARCIA is from Los Angeles with Mexian Roots. She plays an unorthodox organ and plays part of drums and percussion.
MARIO BATKOVIC is a Bosina born and since childhood living in Bern. He is a classical and kraut avantgarde accordionist. He creates film and game music and has a one man band himself. He’s a total Genius. (Prodused by Geoff Barrow of Portishead.)
JULIAN SARTORIUS another Bern original. He’s probably one of Europeans or Worlds most extraordinary drummer these days.
RESLI BURRI is a legendary Bern musician who has a jam-band together with Mario and Beat-Man. He is a multi instrumentalist play in the Dead Brothers, Padent Ochsner, is a film and circus music writer.

Stay Wild Wilder and please turn more Surreal and Obscure

Yours

BLACK BOYS ON MOPED

At the moment I have got LOVE… with a little bit of noise the debut album of French garage rock and roll band BLACK BOYS ON MOPED so not long before I walked around the room made headbang and some guitar moves and cried fuck you! Try it!

Greek Electro Punk

Komodina 3 was a Greek band. Everybody knows them but nobody saw them to play. Like the band Ghost Train (or Kummitusjuna) in the film Zombie & The Ghost Train by Finnish director Mika Kaurismaki which is among my favorites. The story of Komodina 3 started n 2005 in Thessaloniki. Some musicians recorded an album, made 80 CD copies, hand-delivered them to some local men of taste. But they didn’t drive to their only show because was too cold out.

Seven years after the owner of Slovenly Records heard their CD in a van during the euro tour of his label’s two Greek bands, Bazooka and Gay Anniversary, and he released it.

One from Komodina 3 started electro-punk solo career as NOMOS 751

Debut album on SLOVENLY RECORDS (US)

1. Trip-hop acid folk under jazz attack. On the one hand the story has begun in 1979 when Ágnes Zsigmondi – singer of Hungarian underground folk band Kolinda – illegally left her homeland and went to live in Paris because her band’s music was not suit for the Hungarian one party state standards so they could not published any records while they released albums in France where she met American jazz drummer (of Sam Rivers and Archie Shepp) Stephen McCraven. Their son MAKAYA McRAVEN was born there in 1983 and has become a drummer. His new mixtape album HIGHLY RARE released now. It was recorded „just days after the death sentence of the American presidential election” when INTERNATIONAL ANTHEM RECORDS invited some jazz musicians into a bar in Cihacgo to play in support of sets by Belgian DJ LeFtO

6. BACK TO THE ROOTS OF INDIE POP

„The great liberating album for our generation was London Calling by the Clash. At a time when the post-punk mob seemed to be removing more color, texture, and beauty from their music with every passing week, London Calling was a revelation, taking us back to reggae and soul and everything that was possible” – said Pat Fish

who formed the band JAZZ BUTCHER in Northampton in 1982 when a friend lent him a compilation album of 70s soul hits, he got a vision of a new way forward, and wrote the song “Partytime”, a three-and-a-half-minute repudiation of post-punk’s sonic and verbal tendencies toward deadly seriousness.

They made four albums for Glass Records between 1983 and 1986. The jacket notes on the dusty tome that recalls this period mentions private detective television series Randall And Hopkirk (Deceased), Thatcher, DIY post-punk, LSD, surrealist cabaret, The Velvet Underground, a bottle of Cointreau or two, the Amstrad 7090 and Ronco’s ‘Black Magic’ compilation. These first four were released in a box set as THE WASTED YEARS on FIRE RECORDS this year October. And now here are the four VIOLENT YEARS in a box set that compiles their next four albums, originally released on Creation Records between 1988 and 1991. The song Looking For Lot 49 is taken from their ’88 album Fishcotheque.

In 1995 they retired in protest against Britpop, American actor Chris Evans and their own frustrating inability to unseat the government of John Major. But nowadays they play as the Jazz Butcher Quartet with ace trumpeter Simon Taylor. Next show > March 1st London 100 Club

8. Italian artist Giovanni Dal Monte aka LA JOVENC from the other side of music. One of his albums “Birds make love with electric ladybugs” initially was imagined as an exhibition of photographs of insects and landscapes and the entire music was composed using samples of insect and bird sounds. But now here is a transposition of an ode from his brand new album MATER on SONATA BOTANICA and ATMOSPHERE RECORDS which contains transcripts of midi scores of renaissance music of Palestrina, De Pres, Ockeghem, Taverner, Encina, Lemlin, etc. It reminds me Laibach’s Bach cover album Kunst der Fuge.

10. THE GREEN CHILD is the collaborative project of Mikey Young from Aussie new wave punk Total Control and Raven Mahon from American indie garage rock Grass Widow. The band’s name was inspired by Herbert Read’s 1935 utopian, anarcho-communist sci-fi novel called The Green Child. The story begins in 1861 with the faked death of President Olivero, dictator of the South American Republic of Roncador, who has staged his own assassination. He returns to his native England, to the village where he was born and raised. On the evening of his arrival Olivero notices that the stream running through the village appears to be flowing backwards, and he decides to follow the water upstream to discover the cause. The stream’s course leads Olivero to a mill, where through a lighted window he sees a woman tied to a chair, forced by the miller to drink the blood of a freshly slaughtered lamb. But at this moment we are under of influence of 80s synth pop on a cold, foggy and rainy day when their debut album released on UPSET THE RHYTHM RECORDS (UK)

16. Finnish jazz drummer OLAVI LOUHIVUORI – who is best known for his post jazz rock group Oddarrang – starts his five album project IMMEDIATE MUSIC to explore the limits of freedom in music with different ensembles from album to album. On the first album he is joined by Pekko Käppi on bowed lyre and Teemu Korpipää on synthesizer and sound effects. Result: space storms with solar flares.

were the basic ideas of British punk band Mekons when it started, but before their first gig in a punk festival the organizer told them – Fast songs or there is no show for you. So they played on double speed. After the show a man went to them and said: – Hey you are really great, I would like to release a single. Later when NME wanted a picture they went to a field and somebody made some shots from miles. After reject they built figures from coat hangers and took photos of them. Finally a photographer was sent by the music mag to crown the failure.

More later Mekons guitarist Jon Langford moved to Chicago in 1992 and discovered the similarities of country and punk, and formed alternative country bands as Waco Brothers (with a former Revolting Cocks and KMFDM member!) and Pine Valley Cosmonauts. Last spring Texan label Monofonus invited Dan Melchior to Austin to record with local post punk idiots Spray Paint. Over a week or so beers were drank and songs were hammered out. The result is a Krauty-Crazy Horse-y blending of these two distinct artists. Dan Melchior (ex-Broke Revue) is a highly talented British musician. He comes from garage punk, worked together with Billy Childish, Holly Golightly and Walker Russel (Pheromoans), and usually makes experimental other music.

Their collaborative album under the name of Contributors out now. This record is the second in a series of Spray Paint collaborations that will be coming out on different labels. The 1st  with Ben Mackie from Aussie punk band Cuntz was released this September on 12XU Records.
