30 years of The Monsters
This year The Monsters – the band of Reverend Beat Man, Voodoo Rhythm Record boss and his male club – turn 30 years old. To celebrate this nice round anniversary, they re-released their – by now totally unavailable – 1995 10”, originally released by the German Jungle Noise Records on CD and LP, supplemented by 7 more songs.
This was the first Monsters album where they used electronic bass instead of the double bass, and since their guitarist left the band, Beat Man remained alone at that position. So he distorted the hell out of his guitar. In addition the band decided that they will not deal with studios anymore, and record the whole album at home on an AKAI 1224 recorder, and that should be it!
This way, they nicely departed from the psychobilly sound of their first two albums, in a GOOD way, the RIGHT way, that is none other than the TRASH FILTH BRAIN-FUCKING PRIMITIVE ROCK N ROLL!!!
And on the occasion of this anniversary release, let me tell you a personal story.
Exactly 10 years ago in 2006 I found out that The Monsters will play in Graz. I told my – then girlfriend, now beloved wife:
– We are going!
– OK, but we hardly have any money.
– Let’s hitchhike! Budapest-Graz is not that far.
– OK.
To tell you the truth, none of us thought that we would ever hitchhike abroad for a concert; we were no teenagers, not even twenty-somethings, and we were over thirty. We had some pretty good rides though, the last one being an Italian owner of a sweets shop in a suit who was heading exactly to Graz to attend his new shop before its opening. He insisted that we visit his store too. We didn’t really feel like doing so, but said SURE. It was getting dark already by the time we got to the pastry shop, he opened the store, all three of us went in, he was explaining all kinds of things to us while everything was foiled up (there was some renovation going on), and this Italian guy in suit with a mustache. The whole thing was as we were in a gore movie, so I told my girlfriend, let’s get the hell out of here! We left our guy there and stepped outside to the street, and who was walking across the street? The Monsters! Of course we told them right away that we are their fans from Budapest and we are heading to the concert! A magnificent moment, I will never forget: Marta all smiley, hugging Beat Man and padding his shoulder. And him, being a gentleman, offered to take us in to the concert. Danke Schön! This way we could also buy some records.
The concert was extra super, both of us had quite some vodka, and the whole audience was really getting into it, dancing and so on. Everything was just wonderful except for the one manager who discovered us sleeping in behind one of the speakers after the concert, and kicked both of us out. Afterwards things became a bit torturous; going through the trash early morning at the railway station (I found a handful of unopened chocolates – though melted) as while dancing during the show I managed to lose all our sandwiches that were in our pockets. Then we came across an old (Hungarian!) gypsy who advised us to go back through Wien. Then we were on the train from Graz to Budapest in the morning, no tickets of course, trying to hide from the conductor till we are in Hungary, then my good ole trick with the conductors there, and we are already at home. True, it was tiring, but it was worth it! And I am not only saying this after 10 years, but also when we got home back then, and opened up our first beer in the kitchen.

And now a few words about the album. How would a record be like that starts out with ‘Psych-out with me’? Awesome! Brutal party R n R! Then the song ‘Searching’, hard as Venom; then pot hymn ‘Pot’, then one of my favorite, ‘It’s not my way’, perfect fast pogo punk song!!! And damned be whoever’s legs don’t start moving after listening to ‘The Rock around the tombstone’ – he or she is hopeless! Then a fucking great Rolling Stones cover, ‘Play with fire’, and so on. Oh yeah, and all bonus tracks are also great! It’s worth keeping in mind that this brutal rock n roll record was recorded and put out during 94-95!

So a lot of things were trendy during the 90s, but a record sounding like this surely wasn’t! On one side all the Seattle rip-offs were going on, techno and all kinds of electronic dance music was coming in, and everyone was trying to figure out how to force together genres that were completely different from each other. On the other hand only people who really knew and liked the Ramones and Moorhead were wearing their t-shirts, even if they could not pronounce their names correctly (Motorhead or Matorhid were in quite widespread usage, and I for one did not know a single soul that pronounced the Ramones Ramonz vs Ramonez). Of course back then I did not even hear about The Monsters.

Godflesh is one of the most influential industrial/drone metal bands. It was founded by Justin K. Broadrick (who was the guitarist of Napalm Death in 1985-86) and G.C. Green in 1988. The band dissolved in 2002, and reformed in 2009.
Justin Broadrick (1985-86: guitar) grew up in a hippie commune. He was about 8 when he heard Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music at first. After Napalm Death he was influenced by 80s hip-hop sound and acid house. Blue Thunder from Brazil
Galaxie 500 was an influential American indie rock band between 1987 and 91, and released three albums. Somebody said their music is such as if Jonathan Richman (The Modern Lovers) would be backed by The Velvet Underground.
The Blog That Celebrate Itself Records in Sao Bernardo, Brazil just has released a „name your price” tribute album. You can find there indie, dreamy, psychedelic rock, for example also by a big favourite, the Mexican psychedelic rock duo Lorelle Meets The Obsolete. While I was listening to the album just lay on my bed, sometimes dropped off a little, sometimes sipped my beer, and said: so good. Because it is long enough, it is perfect for longer snoozes too.

WOODEN BOX FROM MY GRANDMA – interview with the DIRTY RATS from Brazil
THEE DIRTY RATS the name of the bands that two brazilian animal who will play in Budapest at 14 OF MAY! We asked some questions to deeper understand the DIRTYRATSISM!
RNR666: Please introduce yourself, who is who and who play what?
Luis: We are Thee Dirty Rats from São Paulo, Brazil; since 2014, I am Luis Tissot I play cigar box guitar and vocals; Fernando Hitman plays the drum and vocals
RNR666: That brutal guitar sound is because of the cigar box guitar do you have, or you have some tricks? Please tell me more about your instrument!
Luis: I built this cigar box together with Fernando. We used parts of old guitars, a Wooden box from my grandma and a piece of an old window to make the neck. we didn’t spend money but it was a lot of work and we didn’t know If it would work or not, but the idea was to make something that would sound wild. I plug it in a hand made fuzz pedal and that sounded great! It ain’t got frets so it has to be played in a intuitive way it makes crazy feedback sounds very particular. I don’t know how long this guitar’s gonna last but has been good for two years and lots of crazy wild shows.
RNR666: Your sound is pretty weird. One part is old school rock n roll / blues and another is like dance punk / synth punk. I fuckin like that mechanical drumming!
Luis: Fernando developed his way to play drums to fit with the weird sound of the cigar box on fuzz. The songs are influenced by garage rock and punk which is our natural background but we also dig some new wave and old school hip hop beats. So we added a budget effect on the snare to sound more like it.
RNR666: Luis! You were here in HUNgary as one time Go-go Boy from Alabama >> full show here!<< and another time one from Human Trash, now you are going with duo of Dirty Rats. How many project do you have?
Luis: A lot of projects with different people all over the world. I love to play and record so I want to do as many as I can. I also play on Jesus And The Groupies, The Great Munzini and The Astonishing Sotos, Facka, Jazz Beat Committee…
RNR666: At all, what are your memories from Hungary? Both times in Budapest was wild shows!!!
Luis: Most of the time thermal bath is fun. The Lovely friends make Me come back as often as possible.
RNR666: Tell me more about Sao Paulo music scene! Yeah!! who is that guy who run Scrap Metal Dealer records, i LOVE his artworks (covers and flyers)!!!!!!
Luis: He is Trash Colapso from Buenos Aires, Argentina (Oops, i thought he is from SP, sorry!). He is a great one man band and play in the coolest Argentina band Sarcofagos Blues Duo which I had the pleasure to produced their last two records at my studio „Caffeine”. Since 2005 I’ve been producing bands at my studio from garage rock to crust core. São Paulo have a strong punk, metal, hip hop scene and also some small gethos of experimental, noise, post punk and garage. it’s a good place to see live bands in small pubs. It’s a crazy city of 20 million people with a lot of social problems, unemployment, homelessness, lack of schools, poverty, drugs abuse, violence, street art, noise, it’s inspiring for sure.
RNR666: What merchandies are you bring on tour?
Luis: Thee Dirty Rats new 7″ Vinyl „traps and mass confusion” which is our 3rd release. We’re also bringing cassette tapes and CDs from preview releases. Thee Dirty Rats shirt looks good and some 7″ records from Jesus and The Groupies, Human Trash, Great Munzini and Bloody Mary.
RNR666: What do you do next playing music? How do you spend your days in SP?
Luis: Beside the studio work I hang around with my 9 years old son.
RNR666: Did you like in your childhood F 1, (there was many good brasilian racer) Senna or Fittipaldi possibly Piquet ? I used to like hahahah! I liked Fittipaldi very much but i hated Piquet.
Luis: Yeah sure Senna were our hero at the time the economy and politic was in a very bad situation, he made people forget for a Sunday about the shit times we were living.

RNR666: Mutatkozzatok be! Ki min játszik?
Luis: A Thee Dirty Rats vagyunk Sau Pauloból, 2014 ben alakultunk, én Luis Tissot vagyok énekelek és cigar box gitáron játszom, Fernando Hitman dobol és énekel.
RNR666: A brutál gitárhangzásotok a cigar box gitárnak köszönhető, vagy van valami egyéb trükköd is? Kérlek mondj valamit a nem mindennapi hangszeredről!
Luis: Fernandoval együtt építettük a gitárt egy régi gitár alkatrészeiből, egy nagyanyámtól szervált fadoboz és egy ablakkeret felhasználásával. Nem került semmi pénzünkbe, de sokat dolgoztunk vele és nem lehetett tudni beválik-e vagy sem. Olyan gitárt akartunk ami jó vadul szól majd. Amikor kész lett rákötöttem egy házi készítésű fuzz pedálra, és működött a dolog !!! Nincsenek bundok, így elég speckó rajta játszani de így még különlegesebben szól. Már két éve használom, nem tudom mennyi van még neki hátra, de már sok vad bulit kiszolgált.
RNR666: Nagyon fura a hangzásotok, egyfelől ott van az alap rock n roll / Blues, másfelől meg olyan mint valami szinti punk / dance punk. Nagyon tetszik az a mechanikus dobolás amit Fernando hoz.
Luis: Fernando kitalált egy dobolási stílust magának ami passzol a gitárom speciális megszólalásához. Fő hatásaink a punkból és a garage rockból jönnek, de csípjük a new wave meg az old school Hip-Hop ütemeket is így a pergőre tettünk egy kis effektet, hogy hasonlítson ahhoz a hangzáshoz.
RNR666: Luis! Harmadjára jársz majd május 14. én Budapesten, három különböző bandával (először mint Fabuolus Go-Go Boy From Alabama >> teljes koncert itt !!! << azután a Human Trash trioval). Hány projekted van összesen?
Luis: Sok projektem van, sok emberrel a világ minden tájáról. Szeretek játszani, felvételeket készíteni, szóval amennyi csak belefér annyit csinálok. Van a Jesus And The Groupies, a The Great Munzini & The Astonishing Sotos (Ez Dead Elvis- el), a Facka, aJazz Beat Committee…

Egy nagyon jó One Man Band és Sarcofagos Blues Duo tagja is ami Argentína legfaszább bandája és külön öröm, hogy az utolsó két lemezüket velem rögzítették a saját, Caffeine nevű stúdiómban. 2005 óta működik a stúdió, mindenféle bandával dolgozok, garage rock -tól a crust core -ig. Sao Pauloban nagyon erős a punk a metal és a hip-hop színtér, de jelen van az experimental, a noise, a post punk meg a garage is. Sok a kis kocsma, ahol élő zene szól. Egy 20 milliós város rengeteg társadalmi problémával, munkanélküliséggel, hajléktalannal, szegénységgel, kábítószerrel, erőszakkal, street art-al és zajjal. Elég inspiráló az biztos!

RNR666: Mivel töltöd a napjaid, ha éppen nem zenélsz?
Luis: A stúdiómban dolgozok vagy a 9 éves kisfiammal vagyok.
RNR666: Szeretted valaha a F1- et? Sok jó brazil pilóta volt, Fittipaldi, Senna, Piquet (mondjuk őt mindég utáltam – Cs. P.).
Luis: Sennát persze! Ő egy hős volt. Abban az időben a gazdasági meg a politikai helyzet nagyon rossz volt Brazíliában, Senna legalább a vasárnapi futamok idejére elfeledtette az emberekkel, hogy milyen szar az élet.
