Cadillac born New Orleans based American traditionalist LUKE WINSLOW-KING plays a mix of old, but maybe eternal American tunes with his band: ragtime, country, blues, gospel, dixie, bluegrass, jazz, rock and roll with minimal and occasionally brass band orchestration.

Strange. None the less he has been started his career in the early 80s I have been never heard about BEN VAUGHN before. His 16th album is the first I have listened. And I am impressed.
The album Piece de resistance has been released recently on French label KIZMIAZ RECORDS. It’s full of good old frenchy western swings and moods. Easy and elegant as this verse from the title song is
„sabotage, bon vivant, nouveau riche, je ne sais quoi, s’il vous plaît, c’est la vie, femme fatale, repertoire”
He made an album Cubist Blues together with Alan Vega and Alex Chilton in 1996. Chilton started his career as a teen star in Memphis in the 60s, then formed the band Big Star, moved to New York and played often at CBGB in the 70s, then in early 80s went to New Orleans at Louis XVI Restaurant to dish wash. King is living in the musical jungle of New Orleans, where he studied music theory, but his scholarship was received in Prague. He comes from a small Michiganian town, Cadillac.
Dead Mall Blues

The harmonica player Walter Daniels and guitarist John Schooley have been shadowy figures in the rock n’ roll underground for a combined forty years. Daniels was mixing blues with punk rock as far back as 1992 with Austin, Texas combo Jack O’ Fire, alongside the Big Boys’ Tim Kerr. He recorded with the Oblivians the Melissa’s Garage Revisited LP (1999), but recorded and performed live with everyone from James Williamson to Eugene Chadbourne, most recently lending his harp to the OBN III’s for their latest album. John Schooley is known as a root rock’n’roll one man band (but he is also member in The Revelators). His first single was among Goner’s first records, and another cult label, Voodoo Rhythm also released his records. It’s a meaningful fact that he toured with blues legend R.L. Burnside as his guitarist.
Now the two together on one, exclusively acoustic album, titled Dead Mall Blues. It’s mainly a selection from the American songbook. 8 from the 10 songs
We Got To Meet Death One Day by Blind Willie McTell (1898-59)
Poor Willie lost his eyesight in his childhood. Soon after lost his father, then his mother, so went whither he could. Wandered in Georgia with his 12 strings guitar. His records were frequently released between 1927 and 35, but under different names because he signed exclusive contracts with concurrent labels… It was a generally established custom at that time. After his record of 1949 he became itinerant musician again. In 1956 a record shop owner recognized him at a corner in Atlanta. The man lured him to his shop with a bottle of corn whiskey. During some shows his last tracks were recorded there.

Shovels and Rope is a Charleston, SC band consisting of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst. Formed in 2010, they sing harmony driven folk, rock and country songs using two old guitars, a kick drum, a snare, a few tambourines, harmonicas, and and maybe a little keyboard sometimes.

The Pine Hill Haints are a traditional bluegrass/folk/honky tonk/country band from Alabama. They describe their southern roots music as Alabama Ghost Music. It’s mixed with gospel, rockabilly, rock and roll and blues. Instruments: guitar, washboard, mandolin, washtub bass, banjo, snare drum, harmonica, fiddle.

In the mid-80s under the influence of 50’s rock and roll Dex Romweber founded his legendary „hardcore Americana” band Flat Duo Jets – as if it came from the grave
Then they went US tour with The Cramps. Their records were released by roots and authentic rock and roll specialist Norton Records and others. 1998 brings the major label contract to them but the album Lucky Eye (with unusual horn and strings arrangement) was the swan song. After the break-up Dex made some solo records and founded the Dex Romweber Duo with his drummer Crash LeResh. In 2007 he was replaced with Dex’s sister, Sarah, who was member in indie pop band Let’s Active in the 80s. She says: „there are few things that me and Dexter absolutely agree on 100% – like Chopin, reincarnation, UFO’s, ghosts…” „and psychology” – Drex completes the list.
„There is a real film noir quality to what we do. Really man, you see the darkest alleys. You see the most haunted streets. You see the wildest prostitutes. You come across drugs. You come across incredibly long drives. You come across band arguments. You come across mysterious people. You come across great people. You come across tremendous assholes, you see this real weird part of America that most people don’t really see on that level. When each record comes, I’m trying to figure out what’s going to fit at this time and what’s a picture of the last two years I’ve lived. The songs that come to me are very much a mirror of what my life has been like since the last record.”
The next chapter is Images 13 with repainted versions of Who (So Sad About Us), Rachmaninoff (Prelude in G Minor), Henry Mancini (Blackout!), Harry Lubin (composer, 60s sci-fi series, Outer Limits, One Step Beyond) and there is a deadly love ballad We’ll Be Together Again, which was written by Eddie Cohran’s girlfriend Sharon Sheeley after the fatal car accident. She also was in the taxi. The song was never released formally but recorded by Jackie DeShannon in the early ‘60s.
Images 13 – new Drex Romweber Duo album on Bloodshot Records. Two intelligible, post-edited sentences from my notes about it: Dynamic roots rock’n’roll with surfy garage rock feeling. There’re some reminiscence of Elvis, Bowie, Iggy Pop.

Jane Hammer – A kedvenc RNR666 bulim egyértelműen a Natural Child koncert volt. A banda tagjai nagyon jó fejek és extrán egyszerű emberek. Amikor meghallották, hogy Arkansasba szeretnék költözni egyszerre mordultak fel és azt javasolták inkább költözzek Tennesseebe, mert ott minden szép és jó. Aztán emlékszem, egyszer berohantam egy terembe, ahol fel voltak pakolva székek egymás hegyére hátára és az egyik sarokban hátradöntött fejjel egy kalappal az arcán aludt egy hosszú szőke hajú férfi. Egy fél óra múlva mikor már feszülten vártam a zenekart, egyszer csak megjelent a szőke hosszú hajú fekete játszós nadrágban, makkos cipőben, szakadt pólóban, odaállt a reflektorral kivilágított mikrofon elé, bemutatta a bandát mindenféle cifrázás nélkül és olyan koncertet nyomtak, hogy azóta nincs olyan nap, hogy ne hallgatnám meg valamelyik számukat. If you know The Pussywarmers then you will be surprised. There is no trace of the punk swing. Chansons, folk ballads, psychedelic beats, rocks and seagulls on a tropical coast. I like this better than the previous albums, but one thing is missing for me, the polyglotry.
