Every time I glad when Orval Carlos Sibelius comes forward with new records. He is a French multi-instrumentalist, who make music in really various styles from abstract electroinc dance to psych folk pop. His music often comes the world of Deerhhof in my mind. But now something almost completely different: psychedelic noise rock with a special taste of kraut-rock with Domotic, King Q4, My Jazzy Child and Aurelien Potier under the name of Centenaire. And it’s also excellent.

Centenaire – Ste Croix EP on Clapping Music (France). Previous Centenaire album

Albums of OCS: Recovery Tapes (2011), Super Forma (2013)

There’re some mistakes: Orval Carlos Sibelius is no more in the band. He left after the previous album (The Enemy, 2009). And King Q4 is not in the band either, he just a guest sometimes… but not on the new EP. So Centenaire now is just Damien Poncet (My Jazzy Child), Stéphane Laporte (Domotic, Egyptology) and Aurélien Potier…

Thank Julien for correction

„No more time for my beloved laziness”- said Joel Gion, the crazy tambourine man of serious psychedelic rock band Brian Jonestown Massacre, and after his solo single now here is the album which was recorded with a bunch of his friends. Joel thinks a lot of people are going to be surprised by this album. „Psych, Mod, Britpop, Shoegaze and Post Punk are just some of the sounds that come into play on this very unique record.” A lazy psychedelic britpop

Not A Barbie Girl

Barbara Lehnhoff didn’t want to become a musician – like so many other individuals, but her debut album under moniker of Camilla Sparksss is better than the new Laibach. You can find danceable technoid rhythms and electro-industrial punk tunes on it.

Barbara grew up in Canada amongst Indian reserves with a little brown bear. She is master of tracking and trapping, and knows the smoke signals.  Then she went among alpine natives of Swiss-Italian borderland to learn economic, graphic design and film making.

„I started playing bass in 2004 when I was studying video in Lugano, Switzerland. I needed a soundtrack for a short film I was working on and so I met up with Aris and we started recording.” And art punk band Peter Kernel was born from this co-operation. They were invited by Spencer Krug from the Canadian band Wolf Parade to open for their European tour in 2010.

How does Camilla Sparksss started?

Camilla Sparksss started while I was unloading my 8×10 Ampeg bass cabinet for the 15th time while we were touring Peter Kernel. I looked at Aris and said “we need to start a lighter project”. (…and of course we’ve always wanted to start something electronic).

(An 8×10 Ampeg bass cabinet’s dimensions: 120 x 66 x 40, around 65-75 kg. – editor’s note)

CS is absolutely another musical world than P. Kernel. What are the main musical influences of CS?

I think CS is a different style from PK, but if you listen carefully both projects are very similar. They’re both minimal, instinctive and raw. The main difference lies in the production and instruments used. At the begging we wanted to transform PK into electro, but as we started writing the songs we became nostalgic of the “acoustic” punch of a live band. So we decided to give Peter Kernel a little sister called Camilla Sparksss. But both projects are influenced by what we’re experiencing in our everyday lives and how we feel in the moment. Musically we listen to very different kinds of music, at the moment my favourite band is Moonface. It’s the solo project of  Spencer Krug.

Are there any non-musical projects?

I love making clothing, especially hand made T-shirts. You can check them on my Bandcamp page. And of course videos. Oh, and I love cooking, but I’m not very good at it.

from the album Donker Mag on Zef Records on CD and digital on 3 June

Die Antwoord (in Afrikaans = The Answer) is a South-African rave/hip-hop crew. They’re part of the Zef counter-culture movement.  The word „zef” is a shortening of the name of the Ford Zephyr that was popular worldwide from the 1950s to the 1970s. In South Africa, these cars were often owned by working-class people. Yo-Landi from Die Antwoord said about it: „Zef is, you’re poor but you’re fancy. You’re poor but you’re sexy, you’ve got style.”

Kord feat. Annie Gylling – We Live In This, 12″

The musician behind Kord is an original member of Swedish cult electronic/acid oufit Frak and producing music since the late 1980’s… with Kord he produces a more synthpop minded kind of music… most of the time… for Gooiland Elektro he teamed up with his partner in crime/love and came up with this raw elektro EP… these tracks are the perfect mix of crazy and twisted electronic music (a signature of his Frak work) and dancefloor orientated sounds since the late 1980’s… so we get served unpolished dance tunes with hints of EBM, new beat and (minimal) elektro… non stop primitive disco for sure!

Rude 66 – 12″

Dutch acid and elektro veteran has been around for a long time… being part of the old school acid scene from The Hague with releases on legendary label Acid Planet and he is one of the originals (again) when it comes to the new wave of electro in the late 1990’s… especially for Gooiland Elektro he has created this dark elektro EP… Beta Evers and Sololust appearing as partners in crime… elektro, acid (beat) and a touch of old school gothic come together!

Europ Europ – Repeating Mistakes LP

The album is noisy but without being a simple drone… the band serves you lo-fi industrial soundscapes presented as songs… sometimes haunting and disturbing but the next minute soothing and hypnotic… ‘Repeating Mistakes’ is not an easy listening album but a piece of music you need to discover by listening to it over and over again… peeling away layers and uncovering the true nature of the songs by doing this… this is simply minimal electronics as it should sound!

Further Reductions is a very beauty speaking name of a Shawn O’Sullivan‘s band. He is one of the important figures in New Yorker analogue synth scene with his L.I.E.S. label; personal projects: Vapauteen, 440ppm; and bands: Led Er Est, Civil Duty and Further Reductions with his wife Katie Rose. During the listening of the latter band’s new album I noted these: a little tribal electro industrial, ebm, techno.

LAMC split 7″ series No 11. Mikal Cronin / WAND. A great split single for the fans of good noisy garage rock.
Mikal Cronin (Charlie and The Moonheart, Epsilons, Party Fowl, Okie Dokie, Ty Segall backing band) is a more and more known figure of „on-the-ground” musical life. His track is a Nirvana-like garage rock. In accordance with order of the series the A-side artist suggets a band to the B-side. Cronin picked the WAND. It was a very good pick. This is the band’s debut song, listen!

Development of Napalm Death and Other Odds and Ends

1942. Napalm was developed in a secret laboratory at Harvard University in Massachusetts.  The name is a combination of the names of two of the constituents of the gelling agent: naphthenic acid and palmitic acid. The napalm fires can create an atmosphere of greater than 20% carbon monoxide and firestorms with self-perpetuating winds of up to 110 km/h (70 m/h).

1944. The first recorded strategic use of napalm incendiary bombs occurred in an attack by the USAAF on Berlin on 6 March.

1980. United Nations declared to use napalm against civilians is a war crime, but the international law does not prohibit the use of napalm or other incendiaries against military targets.

1981. Napalm Death was founded at a little village in heart of England by Nicholas Bullen (vocals, bass) and Miles Ratlidge (drums). They were around 14 then and listen to too many punk music.

1981-87. Constant line-up changes. There were 15 members during this period. The first album was recorded in two parts in 1986 and 1987 by two different line-ups, only the drummer Mick Harris is same on both side of the „officially” first grindcore album ever. Both founders left the group, Ratlidge in ’85, Bullen in ’86 together with Justin Broadrick, because they were discontented with the direction of the band. After the B-side recordings Shane Embury who was drummer in death metal bands joined as bass player.

1989. Lee Dorian (vocal) and Bill Steer (guitar) left the band due to musical differences. Dorian rather to found one of the first doom metal bands Cathedral; Steer rather to want concentrate to his own band Carcass. They were changed by Mark Greenway (vocal) from the death metal Benediction, and a Mexican born American guitarist, Jesus Ernesto Pintado Andrade from Terrorizer. Jesus stayed until 2004.

1991. Another American guitarist in the band. Mitch Harris arrived from Righteous Pigs. About this time he had a common project with Mick Harris: Defecation. After the third album Mick Harris left Napalm Death, because it became too death metal for him. He was replaced by an American drummer Danny Herrera.

1994. Napalm Death remixed a song of a British hardcore-rap crew, Gunshot.

After and beside Napalm Death

Miles Ratledge (1981-85: drums) living in Aarhus, Denmark where he runs an Ashtanga Yoga school.

Nicholas Bullen (1981-86: vocal, bass) studied English Literature and Philosophy. In 1991 he joined Mick Harris brand new project, Scorn, left it in 1995, and gained another university degree in Computer Science. He is occupied with avant-garde electronic, ambient, experimental music, sound art and 8mm film making.

Mick Harris (1985-91: drums) while was in Napalm Death also played for Doom and Extreme Noise Terror. 1991 he has formed an electronic metal-industrial dub band Scorn with Bullen, and Broadrick also appeared in the early recordings, but today he is the sole member. In the same time of founding of Scorn he joined John Zorn and Bill Laswell’s jazzcore band Painkiller. He had also dark ambient and drum and bass projects.

Justin Broadrick (1985-86: guitar) grew up in a hippie commune. He was about 8 when he heard Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music at first. After Napalm Death he was influenced by 80s hip-hop sound and acid house. His bands: Final (power electronics, dark ambient, founded in 1982),  Godflesh (industrial metal, 1988), Techno Animal (industrial hip-hop with Kevin Martin from GOD, 1991), Jesu (post-metal, 2003), Pale Sketcher (“shoegazy dream-pop that’s almost techno”, 2010) and more

Some Shane Embury’s side-projects:
Meethook Seed (industrial metal, 1992) with Mick Harris and Obituary members.
Brujeria (as Hongo with ND guitarist Jesus Pintado as Cristo de Pisto) with Jello Biafra, Fear Factory and Faith No More members and more.
Venomous Concept (grind-punk, 2004) with Danny Herrera, and Buzz Osborne (Melvins). Buzz was replaced by Dan Lilker (Anthrax, Nuclear Assault, S.O.D., Brutal Truth)
